Job Description
The Tutor & Team Building Specialist is responsible for supporting students with homework, providing guidance to improve understanding, organization, and study skills during homework time and leading and implementing Team Building activities during programming blocks. The Specialist supports the students and programming of an after-school program, ensuring an encouraging, safe and nurturing environment for children. Responsibilities: Tutoring: Assist students with homework, projects, and, as needed, test preparation across various subjects. Lead students one-on-one, in small groups, and in large groups. Break down difficult concepts into simpler terms to improve student comprehension. Teach study skills, organization, and time management. Provide constructive feedback to students and parents. Maintain a positive, focused, and safe environment for learning, ensuring students stay on task. Support students with academic tasks on paper and on the computer. Ensure that the computers are signed out, returned, and used appropriately. Use positive reinforcement and clear boundaries to ensure responsibilities are completed. Work closely with youth staff to ensure students are cared for. Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment. Team Building: Program Development: Plan and implement Team Building activities for a group of students. Ensure materials and space are ready for group activities. Accommodate activities to include students with special needs. Adjust activities for differing grade levels from kindergarten through eighth grade. Communicate with youth staff to participate and care for student needs. Youth Support: Build relationships with students and encourage their development of positive relationships with their peers Help students become more aware of their environment and better able to act independently Help them gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in their ability Collaborate with ASP Supervisor and Youth Leadership to meet the goals of the After School Program Identify opportunities for program improvement and communicate with Youth Leadership Team Attend regular staff meetings and training sessions to ensure a cohesive and effective team. Ensure adherence to safety protocols Be a positive role model Physical Requirements: Flexibility to bend, sit, and/or squat. The ability to walk all over the campus through the day. The ability to spend time outside in the elements include heat and rain. Being able to sit and for long periods of time. Good dexterity and vision for computer usage. The ability to lift 20 lbs. on a regular basis. The ability to lift 50 lbs. on an occasional basis. The ability to lift, set-up, takedown, stack, and move carts of tables and chairs. Work in bent, twisted or awkward work posture and stand for more than two hours in a row. The ability to reach both outward and overhead. Skills you’ll need: College degree in field working with children preferred. At least three years of academic support and leading team building activities with children. Patience, empathy, and the ability to communicate effectively with students of various ages. Strong knowledge of elementary level reading and math strategies. Strong knowledge of middle school level reading and math strategies preferred. Experience with and openness to relate to people of all backgrounds, knowledge and observance levels. Commitment to and investment in the Alper J’s mission. Willingness to pitch in and take action, a “can do” attitude. Strong communication skills, both written and spoken, preferably with fluency in both English and Spanish. Comfortable leading small and large groups of students. A willingness to bring the RUACH!
