About ThedaCare!

Summary :

Ultrasound Extern assists in performing general, ob-gyn, and vascular exams in a variety of settings and on all patient ages under the supervision of a registered diagnostic sonographer. They will adhere to the system safety and quality standards and utilize proper ergonomic techniques.

Job Description:

Key Accountabilities

  • Applies knowledge of anatomy/pathophysiology and critical thinking to implement appropriate imaging techniques using established protocols to acquire required images under the supervision of a registered sonographer.

  • Evaluates studies for diagnostic quality and all studies performed need the approval of a supervising sonographer or radiologists. The supervising sonographer will back scan the patients until the student demonstrates competency for that exam.

  • Applies critical thinking skills when triaging and prioritizing patients along with maintaining order accuracy.

  • Completes documentation on time and accurately in accordance with department policy/procedure under the supervision of a registered sonographer. This includes proper image management and accurately documents in EMR.

  • Practice safety at all times, which includes but not limited to: using mobilization and immobilization devices, follow safe patient handling practices, follows infection prevention practices (proper personal protective equipment, hand hygiene) to comply with all government agencies or other regulatory bodies the guidelines to ensure safety of our patients and staff.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program.

  • Hospital experience required.

  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds without assistance

  • Category 1: Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments

  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents.

  • Occasional high noise level in work environment.

  • Occasional contact with aggressive and/or combative patients.

  • Use of computers throughout work day

  • Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrist and fingers

  • Repetitive motion of shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands while scanning patients.

  • Frequent sitting with movement through department/hospital.
