Job Description
Make a Difference for Montana's Environment and Communities
Are you looking for a career where your work directly contributes to protecting human health and Montana's natural environment? Join a team of dedicated environmental professionals committed to safeguarding the state's land, water, and communities.
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking an Environmental Science Underground Storage Tank (UST) Specialist to support our mission of preventing releases of petroleum products and hazardous substances from underground storage tank systems statewide. This position is part of the Tanks, Brownfields & Federal Facilities (TBFF) Bureau within the Waste Management & Remediation Division.
Position Overview
The Environmental Science UST Specialist plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting environmental quality. Core responsibilities include:
- Reviewing compliance inspections and conducting State UST oversight inspections
- Carrying out enforcement actions and facility follow‑up tasks using program tools such as Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) and Enforcement Requests
- Conducting Environmental Assessments (EAs)
- Issuing UST construction and operating permits in accordance with Montana regulations and industry standards
- Delivering licensee training, stakeholder outreach, and compliance assistance
- Educating facility owners and operators on UST system requirements and best practices for operation, maintenance, and recordkeeping
- Providing on‑site technical assistance and operator training materials to support long‑term compliance
This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working both independently and collaboratively, engaging directly with the regulated community, and applying technical and regulatory knowledge to protect Montana's environment. Because underground storage tank systems involve complex engineering, integrated mechanical and electrical components, and stringent State and Federal performance standards, this position is well‑suited for professionals who are energized by solving multifaceted technical problems and ensuring that sophisticated tank systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full regulatory compliance.
