This is a hands-on field leadership role for a superintendent who can plan the work, lead crews, coordinate equipment and materials, solve field problems, maintain schedule, and drive production while meeting safety and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day field operations for underground utility construction projects.

  • Plan and coordinate installation of water mains, sanitary sewer, storm sewer/drainage, manholes, structures, services, and related underground infrastructure.
  • Review and interpret civil plans, utility drawings, profiles, specifications, elevations, and construction schedules.
  • Plan manpower, equipment, materials, deliveries, and daily production requirements.
  • Coordinate excavation, trenching, bedding, pipe installation, structures, backfill, compaction, testing, tie-ins, and restoration activities.
  • Ensure proper excavation and trench safety practices, including shoring, shielding, trench boxes, sloping, and benching as required.
  • Monitor crew productivity, quantities installed, equipment utilization, and progress against the project schedule.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, inspectors, owners, subcontractors, suppliers, and other field operations.
  • Identify utility conflicts, constructability issues, changing site conditions, and other field challenges and work with project leadership to resolve them.
  • Ensure work complies with project plans, specifications, applicable codes, quality standards, and company procedures.
  • Coordinate utility testing, inspections, tie-ins, shutdowns, and required field documentation.
  • Conduct or support daily safety meetings, job hazard assessments, and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate daily reporting of manpower, equipment, production, delays, deliveries, and significant field conditions.
  • Help control field costs by managing labor, equipment, materials, rework, and production efficiency.
  • Maintain an organized, professional, and safe jobsite.
  • Mentor foremen and field personnel and help develop strong, productive utility crews.

Required Qualifications

  • Significant field experience in heavy civil underground utility construction.
  • Prior experience as a Utility Superintendent, Underground Superintendent, General Foreman, Utility Foreman, or similar field leadership position.
  • Strong hands-on experience with water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage construction.
  • Thorough understanding of excavation, trenching, pipe installation, structures, backfill, compaction, testing, and utility construction sequencing.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise field crews and coordinate multiple pieces of heavy equipment and concurrent construction activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, utility drawings, specifications, grades, and elevations.
  • Strong knowledge of excavation and trench safety requirements.
  • Ability to plan work ahead and identify manpower, equipment, material, and access requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.

Preferred Experience

  • 7+ years of underground utility / heavy civil construction experience.
  • 3+ years in a Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, or comparable leadership role.
  • Experience with large-diameter water, sanitary sewer, or storm systems.
  • Experience working on commercial, municipal, public infrastructure, industrial, or large site-development projects.
  • OSHA training and/or excavation competent-person training.
  • Experience coordinating utility testing, municipal inspections, tie-ins, and project closeout.

Ideal Background

The strongest candidate will have a proven track record of independently running underground utility scopes from mobilization through completion.
