Job Description

This is a hybrid position requiring 3 days in office at either our Hartford, CT or New York, NY office location.*We may consider someone for a Senior Underwriter role with the right experience  #LI-Hybrid

CapSpecialty is seeking an Underwriter for our Special Risks team who underwrites risks like manufacturers, distributers, hospitality businesses, real estate portfolios, and special events. Responsible for business development and growth through building relationships with assigned broker partners and applying sound decision-making to underwrite business that contributes to a profitable portfolio.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate new/renewal business referrals or requests to determine acceptability based on company underwriting guidelines and appetite.
  • Complete internal policy review audits to meet company guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain broker relationships with key agency partners to optimize underwriting profit.
  • Provide excellent customer service by prioritizing tasks, responding to inquiries in a timely manner and assisting with technical issues.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of all our product offerings, pricing and coverages.
  • Ability to interpret and effectively communicate coverage forms and underwriting guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of underwriting guidelines, applications and initiatives.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with other departments to evaluate and resolve problems or issues of common concern.
  • Review inspection reports for accuracy in a timely manner and take appropriate actions when needed.
  • Meet internal service level goals on a consistent basis.
  • Obtain new business opportunities through proactive phone calls and/or establish and maintain excellent broker rapport and make broker visits.
  • Provide feedback to management on market conditions, competitor info, and broker movements through discussions with assigned brokers and trade associations.

Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge of insurance contracts, basic accounting, risk management techniques, and state regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think clearly and quickly, multitask, and work independently as well as with others.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent.
  • 3 – 5 years of general liability underwriting experience with an Excess & Surplus carrier and prefer candidates with existing wholesale producer relationships.
  • Completion or continuing work towards industry certification (i.e. CIC, IIA, CPCU) is preferred and encouraged.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May be required to lift up to 15 lbs. at times.
  • Customary business travel, including air and car travel, may be required.
