Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Some experience in a human services setting.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Must obtain a food handlers certificate within 45 days of hire (Hylan Shelter only).
- Valid NYS Driver's License preferred.
Work Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Work Location Requirement: Onsite

About the Role
The Unit Counselor supports residents by providing care, support, socialization, crisis intervention, and facility monitoring across shelter programs.
Primary Responsibilities
- Participate in or conduct orientation for new residents.
- Communicate program processes and activities to residents.
- Provide social support and motivational interviewing interventions.
- Provide transportation for residents to appointments as needed.
- Assist with meal-related activities including warming, serving, and cleanup.
- Document neighborhood activities and resident interactions.
- Participate in crisis intervention as needed.
- Attend management, supervision, and required training meetings.
- Report serious incidents and complete required incident documentation.
- Conduct hourly rounds and ensure resident wellbeing.
- Arrive to work on time and as scheduled.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
