Position Title:

Unpaid Intern- Mental Health Counseling

Job Summary:

The internship program at Counseling and Peer Support (CAPS) at College of Lake County is a 10 month service delivery program for Masters-level mental health counseling interns in Illinois. This is an unpaid position. The intern will join the clinical staff at CAPS and conduct clinical services provided to CLC students, while accruing hours for meeting the academic demands of their program of origin. The intern will conduct all activities at CAPS under the supervision of a licensed mental health provider. The Director maintains adequate communication with the intern’s program of origin for adequately supporting training needs. 

Job Description:

Theinternis expectedto work in person at the clinic on the College of Lake County’s Grayslake Campus for a minimum of 16 hours a week and a maximum of 24 hours per week,withan optionto conductupto4hours remotely.The delivery of services on campus can include intakes, individual and group therapy, andtelehealthsessions.Clinical work maybetemporarilyrecorded for the purposes of supervision using technology and equipment provided by CAPS.Theintern cananticipatecompleting on average a minimum of 8 clinical hours a week, depending onlevelof readiness, and as agreed upon with theDirector

Supervision is approached from a developmental-mentoring perspective, where focus goes to progressively supporting theintern in developing their clinical, therapeutic skills. Should theintern have the skills to deliver services in fluent Spanish, supervision can match the language of the service. In addition to 1 hour of individual supervision, theintern willparticipateinthe weekly Case Consultation with the entire clinical staff (group supervision).Clinician’suse this hour to consult on their cases, as needed, to address clinical and ethical issues. The input from theintern is valued in this meeting. Theintern cananticipatecompleting 3-5 case presentations over the course of the10 monthexperience during the Case Consultation rotation of clinicians. Overall, theexternshould expect to receive supervision that will enhance their use ofevidence-basedtreatments that respond to clients’ needs.

In addition to direct service hours and supervision, theintern will complete documentation,assistwith mental health outreach activities, and support clinic operations as needed.

Requisites

  • Bachelor’s degreecompleted

  • Currently enrolled in Master’s degree program for mental health counseling or related field

  • Good standing with program of origin (i.e., recommended for practicum/internship)
