Job Description

Vice President, Finance - Mission Services is responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the Mission Support Quasi Endowments (MSQE) and Foundation under the leadership of the Senior Vice President, Finance. Leads all operational financial functions including monthly reporting, variance analysis, pro forma development, annual budget process, and long-range financial modeling. Serves as a partner to MSQE and Foundation leadership.

Experience

  • A minimum of 12 years of combined experience in lead operations and financial management roles of a multi-disciplinary healthcare practice, a minimum of 8 years of experience in direct financial management
  • Experience leading in academic medical centers or institutions with significant research/teaching components
  • Experience with research funding (grants, NIH, philanthropy, and indirect cost recovery)
  • Experience with Graduate Medical Education (GME) funding, resident/fellow support, and related reimbursement
  • Experience leading the financial management or operations for large multi-site physician groups and/or employed physician networks
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting, financial planning, productivity analytics, reimbursement, and capital planning

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting or finance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and/or CPA, CPAM or FHFMA certifications
  • Additional experience in a financial role at a payor organization
  • A large integrated physician practice or acute care health system experience
  • Pediatric experience

  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare finance, physician enterprise operations, education, and research
  • Understand academic health center dynamics: understanding of the three missions (clinical, research, and education), and how funds flow between hospital, school of medicine, and physician enterprise.
  • Familiarity with affiliations and joint ventures: can interpret and operationalize affiliation agreements, management services agreements, and professional services agreements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads all operational financial functions including, month-end close, variance analysis, budget, process, pro forma development, and long-range financial planning.
  • Responsible for process improvement in charge capture and reconciliation, as well as other areas of revenue optimization.
  • Responsible for team and leader development, engagement, and retention.
  • Responsible for key performance metrics reporting and interpretation.
  • Develops strategies/alternatives for optimal performance by collaborating with leaders from revenue cycle, managed care, and coding areas.
  • Responsible for setting and following the strategic financial direction for Mission Support Quasi Endowments (MSQE) and Foundation, including goal setting, near and long-term planning.
  • Operates as the key financial partner to the VPs of the functional areas as well as the Executive Director of the Pediatric Institute, while overseeing day-to-day financial operations. Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting the results of operations while working with the practices to achieve targeted results.
  • Leads the annual budget (operating and capital) process and provides direction on how to utilize tools and set budgets. Reviews and approves the initial budget submission for the group. Serves as an advocate and first point of contact for all budget matters.
  • Oversees the development of financial pro formas, financial feasibility studies and business plans with operational leaders by providing input, guidance, and validation.
  • Engages with legal, human resources and third-party consultants to structure appropriate contract terms related to affiliations.
  • Works closely with Finance to determine and understand profitability by functional unit, financial class, and other meaningful segmentations; uses this knowledge to educate leadership on implications of decisions to long-term profitability.
  • Demonstrates competence as described in the Children's Leadership Competencies.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility; maintains records and reporting of compliance activities.
  • Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports the problem resolution process.
  • Provides excellent service routinely in interactions with all customers, i.e., coworkers, patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, etc.
  • Develops monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports/surveys/returns for internal and external constituents that are accurate, timely and compliant to support informed decision-making.
  • Interfaces with operating departments and financial operations managers to evaluate budget variances to appropriately report financial performance.
  • Represents the division as a member of the leadership team to develop and monitor the system's mission and values, strategic/operational plans, budgets, resource allocation, quality improvement and utilization management activities.
  • Participates in educational programs and professional organizations to maintain knowledge of national health care trends and to promote leading edge performance.
  • Manages restricted funds (temporarily restricted and permanently restricted) to ensure assets are retained until the condition or time restriction is met and that funds are appropriately reported.
