POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Investigative Support Technician provides administrative, technical, and operational support to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), NOAA. This position directly supports enforcement and compliance efforts related to federally regulated fisheries and marine resource protection.
This position plays a critical role in maritime domain awareness (MDA), Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) oversight, case processing support, and compliance auditing activities. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, technical proficiency with geospatial tracking systems, and the ability to operate effectively in a law enforcement support environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Automated Identification System (AIS) platforms to identify potential fisheries violations and anomalous vessel activity; report findings in accordance with established SOPs.
- Maintain and update maritime tracking systems, alerts, and tracking spreadsheets to ensure accurate and current vessel data.
- Generate recurring and on-demand investigative, enforcement, and VMS-related reports within established deadlines.
- Process case-related data and complete investigative support and requisition forms using approved templates and systems.
- Conduct bi-monthly dockside VMS compliance audits and enter audit results into designated online systems.
- Receive, monitor, and respond to incoming communications (phone, email, chat) in a timely manner.
- Provide general administrative and operational support, including document preparation, data entry, electronic filing, and task tracking.
- Occasionally operate a government vehicle
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma plus a minimum of two (2) years of related experience; or
- Relevant post-secondary education or technical training may substitute for experience.
- Experience with data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic filing systems.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Chat, Google Calendar).
- Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage relational data within spreadsheets.
- Experience with geospatial vessel tracking systems (VMS and AIS) and alerting tools.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Valid driver's license (required for local driving and dockside audit activities).
