Job Description

Sola is building a new approach to homeowners insurance.

We began with a supplemental wind/hail product, backed by Lloyd’s, designed to address the growing gap created by rising percentage deductibles and reduced roof coverage. The product has scaled quickly through our exclusive independent agency distribution.

The next step is to integrate this capability into a single home insurance offering, creating a streamlined, single-policy experience and a materially better customer outcome.

This is a rare opportunity to build and own a homeowners product from first principles with real distribution and capital already in place.

Role Summary

We’re hiring a VP, Insurance Product to lead the build of our homeowners product from zero to one.

You will define the product, make the key risk and pricing decisions, and build and lead the core insurance organization across underwriting, actuarial, and product. This is not a role focused on maintaining an existing book or optimizing at the margins. You’ll be responsible for the core decisions that determine whether this becomes a category-defining product:

  • What risks we take (and avoid)

  • How we price and structure them

  • How coverage is designed

  • How we scale the portfolio responsibly

This role owns the homeowners product line and its long-term P&L.

Key Responsibilities

Product & Portfolio Strategy

  • Define coverage structure, underwriting guidelines, and portfolio construction

  • Set risk appetite and make core product decisions that determine long-term performance

Pricing & Profitability

  • Own rate strategy, rating plans, and pricing models

  • Balance growth, loss ratio, and catastrophe exposure

  • Make tradeoffs between competitiveness and profitability

Build & Lead the Insurance Organization

  • Hire and lead underwriting, actuarial, and product functions

  • Establish operating cadence, decision frameworks, and performance standards

Regulatory & Market Expansion

  • Lead filing strategy across states (forms, rates, rules)

  • Determine sequencing and approach to market entry

  • Own DOI relationships and regulatory outcomes

Reinsurance & Capital Alignment

  • Work directly with reinsurance partners (including Lloyd’s)

  • Shape the product around capital constraints and opportunities

  • Lead reinsurance submissions and negotiations

Execution

  • Partner with engineering to build rating, underwriting, and policy infrastructure

  • Work with distribution to ensure strong agent adoption and experience

Who This Role Is For

This role is designed for someone who has already been close to the decisions and now wants to own them.

You have:

  • Held a senior role in homeowners or personal lines at a leading carrier

  • Owned or directly influenced pricing, underwriting, or product strategy at scale

  • Understand how decisions get made and where the real constraints are

You’re now looking for:

  • Full ownership of product and outcomes

  • The ability to move faster and make decisions directly

  • A chance to build and scale, not just manage

  • If your experience sits above or outside this profile, we still want to hear from you.

What Makes This Compelling

  • Ownership: You are accountable for building and scaling a core product line

  • Clean slate: No legacy systems, no inherited book, no historical constraints

  • Proven foundation: Existing distribution and a scaled wind/hail product

  • Real stakes: Your decisions directly impact growth, profitability, and company trajectory

  • Category creation: Opportunity to define a new standard in homeowners insurance

Compensation

  • $200k - $300k base

    • Salaries are benchmarked to experience. The range above reflects our expectation for most candidates and we will align compensation accordingly for the right person.

  • Meaningful equity participation

  • Full health benefits

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Daily lunch and snacks, on-site team in Atlanta
