Job Description

Job Summary

Operates and maintains a variety of Weight Handling Equipment (WHE) / Material Handling Equipment (MHE) and other equipment. Loads and unloads supplies and equipment from ships, docks, warehouses, motor vehicles, and moves hazardous materials as required. Set up and repair rigging for construction projects, shipyards and other activities.

Primary Job Functions

  • Must be proficient in operating various types and sizes of Weight Handling Equipment (WHE) / Material Handling Equipment (MHE) to include but not limited to front end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers with attachments, excavators, tractor trailer combinations, man-lifts, rough terrain forklifts, 15-ton cranes, and multipurpose sweepers.
  • Maintains records on certified materials and equipment; Assembles rigging to lift and move equipment or material; Selects cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, and sheaves, according to weight and size of load to be moved; Attaches pulley and blocks to fixed overhead structures, such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, with bolts and clamps.
  • Attaches load with grappling devices, such as loops, wires, ropes and chains, to crane hook; Gives directions to Bridge or Gantry Crane Operator or Hoisting Engineer engaged in hoisting and moving loads to insure safety of workers and material handled, using hand signals, loudspeaker, or radio; Sets up, braces, and rigs hoisting equipment, using hand tools and power wrenches; Splices synthetic or natural fiber rope and wire cables to make or repair slings and tackle; Pours sockets with resin or zinc.
  • May direct workers engaged in hoisting machinery and equipment into ships; Maintains records on certified materials and equipment.
  • Tests and certifies rigging gear and equipment in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned; May perform work in other classifications when incidental work is necessary to the accomplishment of the work assignment. 

Education, Experience and Certification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education
  • 5 years related experience
  • Class A CDL with P (Passenger) and H (Hazmat) endorsement certifications

  • OSHA 10 highly preferred

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, constant arm extensions.
  • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
  • Must be able to pass a local background check and have the ability to obtain and maintain security clearance after hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Knowledge of NAVFAC P-300, NAVFAC P-307, and NAVSEA OP-2239, DOD 4500.36R, NAVSUP P-538, NAVSEA SWO23, and NAVSEA OP5.
