Reporting to the Head of Sports, the editor will manage freelance assignments, edit features, strategize and execute coverage across site and social, and lead the team in meeting goals. They should have a robust knowledge of sports in general, but NBA, NFL, and the Complex angle especially. Requirements include 2+ years of team management experience, 4+ years of either writing/editing, 1+ years of social media experience, and a deep understanding of sports. What You'll Do Guide editorial voice for Complex Sports, curating taste and tone of channel, ensuring both are well-represented across editorial and social. Manage freelance assignments according to vertical budget and goals. Edit features across Complex Sports vertical, with a focus on lists and creating premium social content. Conceptualize and execute social media roll-out strategies to best distribute content via our networks, from social media to video properties. This includes but is not limited to, copywriting, asset production in Photoshop, and posting to social media platforms. Monitor, surface, and execute social media content around viral and breaking news content in real-time. Craft timely pitches and editorial content related to the Sports world, exploring angles that will resonate with the Complex audience. Communicate with the Head of Sports to develop stories and strategize coverage around major moments and events. Establish priority subjects and categories for coverage by working closely with the Head of Sports and Director of Content Strategy. Work closely with the Social Editor, Sports to execute vertical-specific tactics, strategic pivots, and provide added direction when needed. Work with other departments to develop stories, strategize coverage, and spearhead new ways to attract loyal readers. Ideate and execute around creation of social-first ideas and tactics in partnership with video, production, and promo team for all content that lives across Sports socials. This includes appearing on camera, as needed. Help guide junior staff to further their growth as skilled editors, reporters, and brand ambassadors for Complex. Remain abreast of new roles and programs. Support all programs offered in connection with the Performance Center and Sports Therapy clinics. Participate and/or supports the development of programs or initiatives to support performance improvement activities to meet the various performance programs Works with clinics to ensure the accurate and reliable deployment of policies/procedures, processes and protocols designed to meet identified goals. If all you can do is play-by-play and locker room interviews, don't bother applying. We need a sports reporter. You'll be expected to make contacts, come up with story ideas, and follow and break the "news" of sports. We want a story finder as well as a storyteller. This is not a 9-to-5 job. And it's not for the faint of heart. There are long days and strange hours. You will work weekends. You will shoot your own stuff. You will get to anchor, but that won’t be the bulk of your job. For our part - we're committed to sports. WLNS is responsible for producing the MSU Coaches Show - which is broadcast statewide - from August through March. When the football team goes to a bowl game, we're there. We do various sports specials throughout the year, including a Big 10 football preview, a bowl special, and a special each week the Spartans remain in the NCAA basketball tournament. We also have the 5th Quarter - an award-winning high school football/basketball show each Friday night. But we don't limit ourselves to football and basketball. Why Were Hiring

Complex is seeking an Editor to cover sports on Complex.com and @complexsports in a way that aligns with our brand and audience. Reporting to the Head of Sports, the editor will manage freelance assignments, edit features, strategize and execute coverage across site and social, and lead the team in meeting goals. They should have a robust knowledge of sports in general, but NBA, NFL, and the Complex angle especially. Requirements include 2+ years of team management experience, 4+ years of either writing/editing, 1+ years of social media experience, and a deep understanding of sports.

What You'll Do

    • Guide editorial voice for Complex Sports, curating taste and tone of channel, ensuring both are well-represented across editorial and social.
    • Manage freelance assignments according to vertical budget and goals. Edit features across Complex Sports vertical, with a focus on lists and creating premium social content.
    • Conceptualize and execute social media roll-out strategies to best distribute content via our networks, from social media to video properties. This includes but is not limited to, copywriting, asset production in Photoshop, and posting to social media platforms.
    • Monitor, surface, and execute social media content around viral and breaking news content in real-time.
    • Craft timely pitches and editorial content related to the Sports world, exploring angles that will resonate with the Complex audience.
    • Communicate with the Head of Sports to develop stories and strategize coverage around major moments and events.
    • Establish priority subjects and categories for coverage by working closely with the Head of Sports and Director of Content Strategy.
    • Work closely with the Social Editor, Sports to execute vertical-specific tactics, strategic pivots, and provide added direction when needed.
    • Work with other departments to develop stories, strategize coverage, and spearhead new ways to attract loyal readers.
    • Ideate and execute around creation of social-first ideas and tactics in partnership with video, production, and promo team for all content that lives across Sports socials. This includes appearing on camera, as needed.
    • Help guide junior staff to further their growth as skilled editors, reporters, and brand ambassadors for Complex.

Who You Are

    • 2-3+ years of experience managing a team and 4+ years of writing and reporting experience at a publisher or website
    • 1+ years of social media experience required
    • A deep knowledge of Sports and athletes relevant to Complex
    • Always-on approach to work and the ability to lead and inspire a team to keep pace with the internetInterested in the culture around sports as much as the sport itself. 
    • Possess a deep understanding of all social media platforms. (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat)
    • Demonstrable commitment to accuracy; fact-checking or copy-editing background a plus
    • Must be comfortable working with a broad range of cross-functional staff—junior to senior, editorial, analytics, design, etc.
    • Must be willing to work nights and occasional weekends/holidays for coverage
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills—ability to perform in a fast-paced, ever-evolving environment, and think quickly and strategically to meet tight deadlines
    • Strong understanding of analytics and social media trends across platforms
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus
$75,000 - $85,000 a year
