Job Summary Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, the Sports Medicine Physician provides expert, non-surgical care to individuals with musculoskeletal, exercise-related, and performance-limiting conditions. You work across the lifespan—from youth athletes to older adults—to prevent injuries, manage acute and chronic conditions, and optimize physical performance. Job Description The Sports Medicine Physician diagnoses and treats injuries and illnesses related to physical activity, with a focus on non-operative musculoskeletal management, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and return-to-play planning. You will deliver care through clinic visits, on-site ultrasound-guided procedures, and collaboration with allied health professionals, while educating patients about recovery and long-term wellness. Job Roles Provide clinical care for acute injuries (e.g., sprains, fractures, dislocations), chronic conditions (e.g., osteoarthritis, tendinopathies), and overuse injuries. Use diagnostic tools such as musculoskeletal ultrasound, X-rays, or MRIs to evaluate and monitor injuries. Administer and interpret ultrasound-guided injections (e.g., corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid) and other in-office procedures. Create and oversee individualized rehabilitation and return-to-activity plans in collaboration with Physical Therapy and other rehab services. Deliver preventive care including conditioning programs, training technique guidance, and education on protective equipment. Provide medical guidance to athletes, students, weekend warriors, and active patients regarding nutrition, performance, and recovery. Diagnose and manage concussions and other sports-related head injuries following evidence-based protocols. Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and behavioral health providers to coordinate care. Deliver care across community clinic settings, including pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations. Participate in community outreach or sideline coverage for school or community sporting events as needed. Meet minimum productivity requirements as defined by the organization. Document all care per E H R and FHCSD guidelines and participate in quality improvement initiatives. Supervise and mentor advanced practice providers, medical students, or residents as assigned. Participate in on-call and administrative duties as assigned Perform other duties as assigned. Education/Certifications/Licenses/Registrations MD or DO from an accredited institution. Board Certified in a primary care specialty (e.g., Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics). Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Primary Care Sports Medicine (or board-eligible if within 1 year of fellowship). Current DEA license and BLS certification from AHA (ACLS preferred). Must hold or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice in California. Traveling between sites and other locations is required as an essential function of the job. Must have a car, a valid California driver’s license, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance as required under California law, although limits of $100,000 are recommended. An acceptable driving record is also required. California law requires all drivers to obtain a valid California driver’s license within ten days of establishing residency. Mileage and other reimbursement governed by policy. Experience/Specialized Skills Minimum 1 year of post-fellowship experience preferred; new Sports Medicine fellows will be considered. Proficiency in musculoskeletal ultrasound and injection techniques . Experience with underserved populations, youth and community athletes, or injury prevention programming highly valued. Familiarity with concussion protocols, return-to-play decisions, and athlete education. Strong collaboration and communication skills in a team-based care model. Basic EMR literacy . Spanish/English bilingual abilities strongly preferred. Cultural and linguistic sensitivity to diverse populations . In addition to these factors – we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is what we reasonably expect to pay for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
