Job Title: Writing Studio Tutor (Casual/Part-Time)

Department: Student Academic Success

Division: Academic Affairs

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Grade: 4

Hourly Range: $20.22 - $24.73

Union: N/A

Reports to: Director, Student Academic Success

General purpose: To support MICA's community of artists and designers by providing personalized writing tutoring services and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that enhances written communication skills, critical thinking, and creative expression.

Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Offer personalized guidance on a range of writing projects, adapting to the unique needs of each student.

  • Create a welcoming environment that respects and embraces diversity, encouraging students to express their unique perspectives and voices.

  • Provide constructive feedback to students, enabling them to reflect and grow their writing and critical thinking abilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with their writing process and projects, providing instruction on a variety of topics including academic essays, technical writing skills, creative expression, resume and cover letters, reading comprehension, Master's thesis development, and spoken and written English fluency.

  • Read and respond to student writing with constructive feedback that centers the practice of linguistic justice and honors the student's authentic writerly voice.

  • Create an accessible learning environment, and partner with MICA's academic community to share strategies and insights that enhance student success.

  • Develop instructional materials for synchronous and asynchronous learning, such as in-class workshops and writing guides, as well as Writing Studio promotional materials.

  • Represent the Writing Studio in classroom visits, on-campus events, and other opportunities to spread awareness of services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in writing processes and articulating complex concepts, especially within art and design contexts.

  • Demonstrates ability to guide students in developing precise, coherent, engaging written work.

  • Exceptional communication skills with a talent for fostering meaningful connections across diverse cultural backgrounds, showing empathy and understanding in all interactions.

  • Able to create tutoring materials and strategies that cater to various learning styles and needs.

  • Flexibility in scheduling and teaching methods to meet the changing needs of our student body, ensuring accessibility and support for every student.

  • A profound appreciation for cultural diversity, committed to nurturing an environment where all students feel seen and supported. Demonstrates cultural humility and an ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth in cultural competence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Creative Writing, Art History, or related fields

  • Demonstrated experience working in diverse, multicultural settings, with evidence of cultural humility practices and understanding of how cultural backgrounds impact writing and communication

  • A track record of supporting diverse student populations, including those with learning disabilities and English language learning students

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and interpersonal communication abilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree or current enrollment in a relevant graduate program

  • TESOL/TEFL Certification or similar qualifications in ESL/EFL teaching methodologies

  • Prior experience in tutoring or teaching, especially within higher education or art and design contexts

  • Background in living, studying, or working in multicultural environments, providing a deeper understanding of cross-cultural communication and engagement

  • Fluency in international languages, like Mandarin and/or Korean.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Satisfactory background check

  • Must be able to commute to Baltimore campus for in-person tutoring shifts.

Physical demands and work environment:

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. (may be adjusted depending on position)

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.

  • Required training: Exhibitions Department Installation Guide and Policy handbook, MICA Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
