Office Location: Minot, ND Apex Engineering Group has an opening for a Survey Technician located in our Minot, ND office.  This is an opportunity to participate in establishing and expanding Apex Engineering Group’s services in the region.  The Survey Technician will primarily work under and report to a Survey Crew Chief and perform typical surveys in the field  including topographic, boundary and construction surveys on various civil engineering projects including highway and urban roadway projects. Ideally the Survey Technician will also be capable of assisting design teams by using or be trained to use various CADD applications such as AutoCAD or Microstation when survey workloads fluctuate.  Typical Tasks and Duties: Work with a Survey Crew Chief or Land Surveyor while performing land surveying services including plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects. Gathers field survey data through the use of conventional surveying and GPS methods. Prepares accurate field notes, drawings and records change in conditions while in the field. May be required to assist with construction observation duties on civil engineering projects. Learn and follow surveying methods and standards as required by state and public agencies. Participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers and engineers on a consistent basis by providing updates and progress during all phases of projects. This position may lead to a more prominent role as a Land Surveyor or Crew Chief which will include becoming responsible for other survey personnel on a project and reporting to project managers and engineers. This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls. Effectively communicate with contractors, engineering staff and project owner representatives in the field. Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies. Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment. Qualification Requirements:  High School diploma or equivalent is required. A 2-year Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or Land Surveying is highly desirable (applicable experience may be acceptable in lieu of an Associate’s Degree). 2 or more years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience preferred. Capable or familiar with operating GPS, robotic and total station survey equipment. Familiar with survey data collection and construction survey methods. Experience with CADD programs such as AutoCAD/Civil-3D or Microstation/GeoPak software is considered a plus. Perform simple surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop computer, and coordinate geometry software. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) required. Must be willing to interact with people and work in team environments. Must be detail orientated, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills. A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.    Physical Requirements:  Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions. Required to work in an outdoors environment including construction sites and close proximity to traffic, noise and dust. Will require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties associated with topographic and construction surveying. May be required to clear vegetation, dig holes, occasionally shovel snow and pound stakes with hand tools. Must work scheduled and required hours in the office or onsite for projects. Ability to lift equipment or objects weighing 50 to 75 pounds. Must work required hours. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This person will report directly to the Transportation Sector Leader. This position is considered a strategic hire and will provide an opportunity to build a traffic team by expanding services to public and private clients. Key responsibilities will include being involved with technical work for transportation and municipal projects requiring traffic engineering and operations analysis. This position will also require participating in the development of new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals and active collaboration on projects with other project managers.   Typical Tasks and Duties: Lead traffic operations studies, corridor studies, traffic impact studies, multi-modal studies, and comprehensive plans. Independently perform traffic engineering related calculations, analysis, and design tasks. Independently write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences. Lead the design efforts in the role of engineer-of-record on traffic and transportation project types including traffic control, traffic signals, signing, pavement marking, and ITS. Efficiently work with technicians to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans Perform independent checking of the design work of other team members. Mentor and oversee the work of less experienced team members. Work efficiently to meet deadlines and complete projects within a given amount of time. Demonstrate a strong ability to meet project budgets and schedules. Participate in business development and marketing activities related to traffic with existing clients and potential new clients. Prepare technical proposals for project pursuits with other project managers and market leaders. Contribute to project pursuit efforts by participating in interviews for specific projects that have a traffic component. Participate in transportation team, management, and company staff meetings and seminars when appropriate. Assist with the development of budgets for traffic engineering elements of projects. Responsible for hiring and recruiting other traffic staff as needed and approved by the Sector Leader. Effective communication skills with the public will be required in settings such as public meetings, informational meetings, construction notifications, etc. This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls. Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies. Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment. Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs. Qualification Requirements:  A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Professional Engineers License or ability to be licensed in North Dakota and Minnesota within 6 months. Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification. 5 or more years of traffic engineering and transportation planning related experience. Experience with transportation projects and public agencies located in North Dakota and Minnesota is preferred. Strong project management skills and experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be detail orientated, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Facilitates and participates in the evaluation of the patient’s medical record by physicians and peers through tasks including but not limited to documentation review, treatment planning, offering insight and guidance to ensure that evidence-based practice standards and clinical protocols are met.
