Overview
Job Description
The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry beginning July 1, 2027. The selected candidate will develop an independent research program supported by extramural funding that integrates current biochemical, biophysical or structural approaches to address fundamental problems in the life sciences including but not limited to those relating to nucleic acid structure/function, proteomics, molecular microbiology, protein structure and function, and enzyme kinetics. The minimum requirement is a Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field. We are especially interested in candidates who have postdoctoral experience in biochemistry, molecular biophysics, or structural biology, and who have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. We seek an individual who can contribute to both our undergraduate and graduate course curriculum, with particular emphasis on the ability to teach biochemistry, advanced laboratory courses in biochemistry or molecular biophysics, and introductory and intermediate molecular biophysics courses. The successful applicant will teach one on-campus course each semester and facilitate a journal club or graduate seminar.
The new hire will establish their lab in our brand-new life sciences building, including a suite of state-of-the art equipment, and participate in our Ph.D. training program and cross-disciplinary initiatives in the life sciences. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, as well as participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. With 3,000 full-time undergraduate students and Ph.D. programs in 5 science departments, Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.
A complete application includes the following materials, with each numbered item combined into a single document: (1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, including publications, (3) a statement of research plans, and (4) a statement of teaching interests, with course syllabi and teaching evaluations (if available). You will also be asked to supply the email addresses for three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college's commitment to fostering an inclusive community.
Applications completed by October 1, 2026, will receive full consideration. Please contact Mary Readinger by email (mreadinger@wesleyan.edu) or phone at 860-685-2409 if you have any questions about the application process.
Work Location: On Campus
All offers to external applicants are contingent on the candidate's completion of a pre-employment background check screening to the satisfaction of Wesleyan University.
