Red 6Louisville, Colorado
Company Overview Red 6 is an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) technology startup leading the way in synthetic air combat training. Our primary technology, supporting our ATARS product, enables pilots to simulate the cognitive challenges of flying while accessing realistic, scalable training in dynamic outdoor environments. The Role Red 6 is seeking a Principal Computer Vision Engineer to take a hands-on role in advancing the development of next-generation AR systems for military and commercial applications. In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms that enable real-time AR capabilities in highly dynamic environments. A key focus will be on head tracking algorithms tailored for AR/VR applications — ensuring precise, low-latency tracking that is robust under real-world conditions. This is not a people-management position. We are looking for a do’er — someone who thrives on solving hard technical problems, building production-quality systems, and directly driving innovation. As a senior technical authority, you will lead by example through your contributions, setting the standard for technical excellence across the engineering team. Key Responsibilities Head & Motion Tracking : Design and implement advanced head tracking and pose estimation algorithms optimized for AR/VR use cases. Sensor Fusion : Develop multi-sensor pipelines (optical, IMU, GPS, etc.) to enable accurate, drift-free tracking and localization. Hands-On Development : Architect, implement, and refine computer vision systems in C++/Python for real-time AR environments. Prototype & Iterate : Rapidly build, test, and refine AR perception systems with hardware-in-the-loop validation. Performance Optimization : Push algorithms to the limits of low-latency and high-reliability performance, ensuring operational readiness. Cross-Functional Collaboration : Partner with hardware, optical, and software teams to ensure seamless integration of tracking systems into AR platforms. Problem Solving : Dive deep into technical challenges at the hardware/software interface, delivering practical and innovative solutions. Documentation : Produce detailed documentation of algorithms, system architecture, and testing workflows. Required Qualifications Education : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (Master’s or PhD preferred). Experience : 8+ years of hands-on software development, with a strong focus on computer vision. Proven expertise in head tracking algorithms for AR/VR or related applications. Expert proficiency in C++ and Python (5+ years each). Demonstrated success delivering production-quality, real-time perception systems. Technical Skills : Deep expertise in head pose estimation, object tracking, and sensor fusion. Experience integrating and calibrating optical sensors, IMUs, and real-world hardware. Strong knowledge of performance optimization, multi-threaded programming, and low-latency systems. Mindset : Hands-on engineer who thrives on building and delivering. Comfortable taking ownership of complex technical challenges and driving them to resolution. Influences through technical authority, not people management. This position may require a security clearance. To obtain clearance, employees must show proof of US Citizenship. Preferred Qualifications Prior work on head tracking in AR/VR systems (e.g., headset-based applications, HUDs). Experience with Unreal Engine or other real-time engines. Background in augmented reality hardware, optical systems, or HUD technologies. Experience in military, aerospace, or aviation applications. Publications, patents, or contributions in computer vision, AR/VR, or motion tracking. Track record of solving technically novel, high-stakes challenges. Job Description

Company Overview

Red 6 is an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) technology startup leading the way in synthetic air combat training. Our primary technology, supporting our ATARS product, enables pilots to simulate the cognitive challenges of flying while accessing realistic, scalable training in dynamic outdoor environments.

The Role

Red 6 is seeking a Principal Computer Vision Engineer to take a hands-on role in advancing the development of next-generation AR systems for military and commercial applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Head & Motion Tracking: Design and implement advanced head tracking and pose estimation algorithms optimized for AR/VR use cases.

  • Sensor Fusion: Develop multi-sensor pipelines (optical, IMU, GPS, etc.) to enable accurate, drift-free tracking and localization.

  • Hands-On Development: Architect, implement, and refine computer vision systems in C++/Python for real-time AR environments.

  • Prototype & Iterate: Rapidly build, test, and refine AR perception systems with hardware-in-the-loop validation.

  • Performance Optimization: Push algorithms to the limits of low-latency and high-reliability performance, ensuring operational readiness.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with hardware, optical, and software teams to ensure seamless integration of tracking systems into AR platforms.

  • Problem Solving: Dive deep into technical challenges at the hardware/software interface, delivering practical and innovative solutions.

  • Documentation: Produce detailed documentation of algorithms, system architecture, and testing workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (Master’s or PhD preferred).

Experience:

  • 8+ years of hands-on software development, with a strong focus on computer vision.

  • Proven expertise in head tracking algorithms for AR/VR or related applications.

  • Expert proficiency in C++ and Python (5+ years each).

  • Demonstrated success delivering production-quality, real-time perception systems.

Technical Skills:

  • Deep expertise in head pose estimation, object tracking, and sensor fusion.

  • Experience integrating and calibrating optical sensors, IMUs, and real-world hardware.

  • Strong knowledge of performance optimization, multi-threaded programming, and low-latency systems.

Mindset:

  • Hands-on engineer who thrives on building and delivering.

  • Comfortable taking ownership of complex technical challenges and driving them to resolution.

  • Influences through technical authority, not people management.

This position may require a security clearance. To obtain clearance, employees must show proof of US Citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work on head tracking in AR/VR systems (e.g., headset-based applications, HUDs).

  • Experience with Unreal Engine or other real-time engines.

  • Background in augmented reality hardware, optical systems, or HUD technologies.

  • Experience in military, aerospace, or aviation applications.

  • Publications, patents, or contributions in computer vision, AR/VR, or motion tracking.

  • Track record of solving technically novel, high-stakes challenges.

Full-Time Employee Benefits

  • Healthcare, Dental, and Vision (100% coverage for Employees)

  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick, paid holidays, and parental leave

  • Short and Long-Term Disability

  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

  • 401(k) Retirement Plan

  • Voluntary Worksite Benefits (Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity)
