Scope: Produce x-ray images of specified body areas as directed by the physician or radiologist ensuring clear and undistorted films. Position and instruct patients regarding x-ray procedures. Perform x-ray procedures using portable machines as requested by the Emergency Department and nursing units. Process films for radiologists reading/interpretation following established procedures. Prepare or clean patient rooms by changing linens, stocking supplies and wiping off tables and equipment ensuring an efficient and clean working environment. Protect patients from undue exposure to radiation by using lead shields and various safety factors. Prepare and assist in administering contrast agents by monitoring dosages and determining any potential allergies ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures. Maintain patient information as needed by purging or updating patient film jackets and/or filing reports or film files to ensure accurate patient records. Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent, required. Successful completion of an approved radiological training program and the ability to meet the requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), required. Current license/certification in the state of practice, (if applicable) required. Current BLS certification endorsed by the American Heart Association, required At least one (1) year of experience in a setting serving the same age/type of patient population served by this facility or department, preferred. The Tufts Medical Center Department of Radiology is pleased to offer an Emergency and Trauma Radiology (ETR) Fellowship for academic year 2024-2025 (2 spots) and 2025-2026 (2 spots). This program is not ACGME accredited and we accept fellows outside any matching process. Program Description This is a one-year fellowship designed for radiologists wishing to receive advanced training in emergency radiology with a focus in neuroradiology. This training program may be suitable for those considering a career in Emergency Radiology, private practice/community radiology, and Teleradiology. Fellows are exposed to Emergency and Trauma Radiology at a Level 1 Trauma Academic Medical Center in the heart of the city of Boston. Primary focus of clinical work involves interpretation of the imaging of acutely ill and traumatized patients presenting to Tufts Medical Center (TMC) Emergency Department. At TMC, all reading rooms have recently undergone major renovation and provide a modern and attractive working environment for ETR fellows. ETR Fellows serve as key members of the care team and facilitate timely communication with Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery teams. ETR Fellows will be supervised by dedicated Neuroradiology, Body, and MSK Attending Radiologists, depending on their rotations, during normal business hours (8 am to 5 pm). After 5 pm, imaging services are covered by our dedicated remote nighthawk radiologists with Day Float and Night Float residents until 2 am. After 2 am, all imaging services are covered by the Night Float resident with Teleradiology Attending coverage. There is no mandatory after-hours duty for ETR fellows, i.e. they are only required to work from 8 am to 5 pm on week days. There are no mandatory evening shifts, weekend shifts, or overnight shifts. Clinical Rotations 6-month Emergency Radiology (acute neuro, body and MSK pathology and trauma) 6-month Neuroradiology (acute inpatient and outpatient CNS pathology) For those trainees who already have, or plan to acquire, Massachusetts Full Physician License by the start date of July 1st (or during the fellowship), they can participate in a voluntary Moonlighting within TMC Radiology to earn extra income by covering weekend calls (Saturday and Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm) as an attending (i.e. signing off reports). Academic time of up to half-a-day per week may be granted to those who would like to be involved in research and/or quality improvement projects. All ETR fellows may attend resident teaching sessions when their schedule allows. Fellows' clinical performance will be evaluated and reviewed by the Program Director and Assistant Program Director on a regular basis, with formal feedback sessions at least every 6 months. Involvement in research and/or quality improvement projects are encouraged but not required. ETR fellows have several opportunities to participate in teaching activities for Tufts University medical students and TMC radiology residents. Career Options After Fellowship Qualified fellows are strongly considered to transition into attending roles at the conclusion of fellowship. Hiring options include a private practice position for those who wish to transition into community radiology, mix of both community and academic radiology, and an academic position at TMC. For those who wish to move onto Teleradiology practice anywhere in the world, our program offers an excellent well-rounded training including all aspects of emergency, trauma, and acute imaging. Assists Radiologist, other Physicians and allied health care professionals in performing diagnostic or treatment procedures. Performs diagnostic testing on equipment and general maintenance. Prepares patient for procedures. Develops film in accordance with photographic techniques. Monitors patient's and equipment's condition during procedure and reports changes to appropriate health care professional. Performs diagnostic imaging examinations like X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography and ultrasound. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records. Prepares patient for radiological procedure by positioning patient; adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specified position; adjustment equipment controls to set exposure factors. Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties, providing explanations of treatment; answering questions. Minimizes radiation to patient and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding, and knowledge of exposure factors. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media, administering first aid, and using the emergency cart. Maintains production and quality of radiograph or other media by following established standards and procedures; developing radiographs; observing radiographic results; making necessary adjustments. Ensures operation of radiology equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques. Maintains radiology supplies and inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. Other duties and projects as assigned. Qualifications: Must have completed an approved Radiology Technician program leading to a Diploma, Certificate or associate degree. Two years (2) experience as a Radiology Technician. CT experience required. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Radiological Technologist and able to be favorably credentialed. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required. Scope:

  • Produce x-ray images of specified body areas as directed by the physician or radiologist ensuring clear and undistorted films. Position and instruct patients regarding x-ray procedures.
  • Perform x-ray procedures using portable machines as requested by the Emergency Department and nursing units.
  • Process films for radiologists reading/interpretation following established procedures.
  • Prepare or clean patient rooms by changing linens, stocking supplies and wiping off tables and equipment ensuring an efficient and clean working environment.
  • Protect patients from undue exposure to radiation by using lead shields and various safety factors.
  • Prepare and assist in administering contrast agents by monitoring dosages and determining any potential allergies ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures.
  • Maintain patient information as needed by purging or updating patient film jackets and/or filing reports or film files to ensure accurate patient records.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Successful completion of an approved radiological training program and the ability to meet the requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), required.
  • Current license/certification in the state of practice, (if applicable) required.
  • Current BLS certification endorsed by the American Heart Association, required
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a setting serving the same age/type of patient population served by this facility or department, preferred.
