Checks expiration dates of all medications and supplies. Assures that adequate communication is maintained between staff for continuity of service. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: Maintains stock supplies in the pharmacy and packages medications as necessary under the supervision of a pharmacist. Prepares IV or other medications using aseptic technique for administration by the nursing staff. Maintains accurate documentation and proper billing, labeling, compounding, and packaging. Obtains pharmacist verification, and delivers medications in an accurate, safe, and timely manner. Prepares chemotherapy and handles blood products in a safe manner utilizing appropriate safety equipment to assure environmental safety of self and others. Maintains and cleans the equipment necessary to perform duties, reporting any failures or need for repair to immediate supervisor or Pharmacy Manager immediately. Prepares and delivers a 24-hour supply of medication to patients daily, checking for and collecting each discharged patient's medications for crediting. Maintains, prepares, and delivers the floor stock medications by nursing units to replenish their stock per department policy and procedure. Follows all policies and procedures for the automated dispensing cabinets. Accurately places daily order for medications and supplies with wholesaler, vendors, purchasing department, and other pharmacies, communicating potential supply issues to immediate supervisor in a timely manner. Verifies inventory received against the invoice noting any exceptions and communicates these to immediate supervisor or pharmacy inventory coordinator. Stocks shelves, rotating stock appropriately. Withdraws and prepares controlled substances for delivery following the policies and procedures for the pharmacy-controlled substance vault. Reports any discrepancies immediately. Accurately bills and credits medication charges as necessary. Makes recommendations for changes to the policies and procedures to the Pharmacy Manager, or other appropriate hospital manager. Assist the pharmacist by correctly entering prescriptions, including refills, into the computer, adjudicating through insurance, filling and labeling prescriptions. Operate and use appropriate techniques within systems for storage, preparation, and dispensing of medications and follow the Health Center’s policies regarding medication preparation and labeling, controlled substances reconciliation, and purchasing of pharmaceuticals and supplies. Obtain patient insurance information utilizing available resources when required and verifying insurance when applicable. Work with pharmacy benefit managers to process rejected prescriptions through insurances. Assist the pharmacist with the transfer of prescriptions between pharmacies ( certified pharmacy technicians only ). Updating patient profile information within the designated electronic health record system. Work with all pharmacy staff to maintain correct inventory levels, including the ordering of medications as well as removal from shelves, and inventory correction, of outdated medications. Works a fluctuating work schedule including day, evenings, and occasionally a Saturday shift (9am-1pm). Job Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Pharmacy Technician registration required in accordance with Massachusetts Regulations. Excellent oral and written communication skills. SUMMARY :  Works as directed by the Director of Pharmacy Services to make sure medication is filled per protocols and indigent program rebates along with third party insurance completed correctly. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Enter (new and refill) prescription orders in the computer to include: Upon receipt of the routing slip check for insurance (Medicaid-obtain card), drug allergies, next appointment; Alert the pharmacist if any drug allergies are known and enter in the computer; Check that quantities are sufficient until the next appointment; Alert the Pharmacist if any drug-drug interactions arise; Enter and charge Medicaid prescriptions properly; Enter and charge all indigent patient programs. Maintain the computer by performing daily backup and monthly backups on the first and fifteenth of each month. Make sure computer systems stay on Monday nights to receive updates. Produce and check reports Print daily controlled substances (DEA) report; Daily transaction report to count number of patients served each day and check for all prices; Print Medicaid for audits with corrections and claims submissions printout. Review denials; Resubmitting appropriately as checked by the pharmacist. Prepackaging medicines for outreach personnel Print labels per protocol and outreach formulary: Generic name, strength, quantity and labeler-manufacturer; used for (brand name if applicable); directions for use (Spanish and English) from outreach formulary; date, lot number and expiration date. Maintain supplies Reorder low stock to include STD and TB medicines; Sign in orders: check quantities, prices and expiration dates, file all paperwork properly; Separate files for Controlled Substances receipts, update acquisition prices in the computer; Return outdated medicine: return before credit is no longer allowed, prepare all paperwork; According to manufacturer’s specifications, mail/prepare for pickup, and send copies to fiscal office; Maintain office supplies: order from proper places using proper forms. File filled prescriptions daily in numerical order. Print prescription forms by using available forms. Update the formulary changes noted by the Pharmacist. Type minutes of the pharmacy meetings.
