Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the part-time grant supported Grade Enhancement Mentor (GEM)/tutor position is responsible for providing workshops, small groups, and individual instruction, and working closely with the Department of Human and Life Sciences faculty to promote appropriate academic support. The Chemistry GEM must be able to provide support for students in all Chemistry courses. Essential Job Functions: Develop and conduct science and other appropriate workshops for students; develop instructional materials in science. Meets with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and improve study skills through one or more of the following techniques: Facilitation of effective study methods in reviewing class material and predicting test questions. Discussion of the class text. Facilitate tutee's formulation of topics and ideas for their class assignments. Facilitate methods for problem solving. For each applicable course, utilizes the current course syllabus, textbook and supplemental materials as approved by the applicable faculty. Provide instructional assistance to individuals and small groups of students in Chemistry courses. Utilize computers for instructional purposes. Attend grant meetings as appropriate. Work appropriate hours in accordance with existing scheduling procedure, which may include evening, weekend, and possibly off-campus assignments. Supervisory Responsibilities None Minimum Job Qualifications Education and/or Experience Bachelor's in a Science related field or Science Education from an accredited institution required; a Master's degree preferred.
