Job SummaryThe Coordinator of Clinical Education establishes clinical experiences for the Respiratory Therapy program and is responsible for the program’s compliance with the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) standards for clinical education. The coordinator creates the bridge between academic education and clinical respiratory therapy practice through collaboration between academic faculty and clinical educators. Assuring an optimal and well-rounded learning environment for each student, the coordinator designs and evaluates clinical curriculum materials; develops and implements classroom, lab, and clinical learning experiences; and plans, implements, and assesses student learning outcomes.

Essential FunctionsClinical Coordination. An essential role of the coordinator is to identify, secure, and assign sites for clinical education. The coordinator is expected to:• Develop and maintain relationships with current and future clinical sites.• Collaborate with the Program Chair and Office of the Provost to establish and renew contractual agreements between Cabarrus College and the clinical sites.• Develop clinical schedules and assign students accordingly to ensure adequate clinical exposure in all areas.• Travel to clinical sites to ensure adequate learning environments.• Develop educational plans as needed to promote effective learning processes for students in their clinical sites.• Coordinate clinical preceptor training based on professional standards and best practices.

Teaching: The Coordinator of Clinical Education is also an instructor and is responsible to teach and facilitate student learning. Teaching activities may occur online or face-to-face in a classroom, clinical, lab, or hospital setting. TheCoordinator of Clinical Education is expected to:• Devote preparation time for instruction.• Orchestrate a course, including time management, to maximize individual as well as group participation by students.• Promote an active learning environment in the classroom.• Appropriately and effectively utilize instructional technology, including online content and delivery.• Innovate and create to assure the best learning experience for students.• Challenge students to think critically and perform at high standards of competence.• Provide opportunities for students to acquire awareness of cultural diversity.• In coordination with Program Chair, develop laboratory competencies and work with students on mastering these laboratory competencies.• Provide constructive feedback and remediation as appropriate.• Hold students accountable to the Student Code of Conduct.• Work with students to locate post-graduation employment.

Curriculum Development: Cabarrus College faculty are responsible for building degree programs that embody coherent courses of study and allow students to progressively build upon and integrate their knowledge and skills.The Coordinator of Clinical Education is expected to:• Annually review syllabi and update student learning outcomes, course content, teaching strategies, learning activities, textbooks, and other supplemental resources.• Participate in departmental review and revision of curriculum scope and sequencing.• Incorporate into the curriculum recent research, standards of practice, and changes from within the discipline, profession, and accreditation standards.

Scholarship: Cabarrus College faculty are expected to continually develop their knowledge of pedagogy, their academic discipline, and as appropriate, their clinical profession. Scholarship activities may include yet are not limitedto:• Enrolling in formal and continuing education classes.• Attaining specialty certification.• Mentoring student papers and projects.• Attending local, regional, or national conferences.• Membership in a local, state, or national professional organization.• The Coordinator of Clinical Education at the Instructor rank is expected to make contributions toward a minimum of two of the above scholarship activities. Other activities may contribute to scholarship as judged to be consistent with the mission of the College. Advancement in rank will require additional documented scholarship activities.

Service: Cabarrus College faculty are expected to contribute to the improvement of the College community through service to the College and broader community. Service activities may include but are not limited to:• Being accessible to students during regular office hours and returning calls and email in a timely manner.• Personalized academic advising to support student success.• Active committee work at both the program and College levels.• Collaboration with peers to accomplish strategic priorities.• Advising student clubs and organizations.• Contributing to admissions application review.• Contributing to the development and revision of policies and procedures.• Involvement in creating program level capital equipment and operating budget requests.• Aiding in the development, assessment, implementation, and evaluation of institutional effectiveness processes.• The Coordinator of Clinical Education at the Instructor rank is expected to make contributions toward a minimum of two of the above service activities. Other activities may contribute toward service as judged to be consistent with the mission of the College. Advancement in rank will require additional documented service activities.

Professional Qualities: The Cabarrus College Coordinator is expected to:• Embody core values of caring, commitment, teamwork, and integrity while representing the College.• Possess a positive attitude, self-discipline, and strong work ethic.• Demonstrate and promote respect for cultural diversity.• Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively handle multiple complex issues in a timely manner.• Be proficient in Microsoft Office and use of the Internet.• Be proficient in the use of learning management system software or be committed to becoming proficient within• one year of hire.• Possess strong reading, written, and oral communication skills, including effective interdisciplinary communication• skills and bedside manner.• Demonstrate effective leadership skills in working with adjunct clinical faculty.• Demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills.• Demonstrate conflict management skills.• Inspire and serve as a positive role model to others.

Physical Requirements:• Normal or corrected auditory and visual acuity.• Exerting up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.• Frequent periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, and stretching.• Able to use standard office equipment, including computers and software.• Environment is climate controlled with occasional exposure to inclement weather when travelling between clinical sites.• Required driving to clinical sites for site visits with students.

Education, Experience and Certifications:Minimum requirement of a master’s degree awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional or national accrediting body.• Required:• Valid RRT credential• Current North Carolina licensure or obtain one within 3 months of hire date.• Minimum at least 4 years’ experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with at least 2 years in clinical• respiratory care. Experience should include a variety of specialty areas (critical care, acute care, general care, diagnostics, and education/rehab).• Minimum of two years’ teaching experience in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor. Online instructional experience preferred. The degree requirement may be waived by the College upon demonstration of appropriate professional training, competence, or experience.

Patient Population Served:Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served.
