Plans and executes individual treatment programs in accordance with the state of Michigan licensure and OT scope of practice. Keeps treatment skills updated through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development. Perform job responsibilities in accordance with the program’s strategic objectives and goals to carry out organizational strategic objectives. Treatment goals should be interdisciplinary and patient-centered whenever possible. Establishes written treatment plan, and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals. Delegates responsibilities to occupational therapy assistants as appropriate. Re-evaluates patient's status and effects of treatment. Revises treatment plan as necessary Reviews revised goals with patient and family as appropriate. Evaluates patient's need for medical equipment and orders the appropriate equipment as necessary. Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, patient's family, and health care workers on its use. Participates in planning for patient discharge by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations. Demonstrates competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities. (Q) Documents patient's status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines. (Q) Communicates with others to integrate occupational therapy treatment with all aspects of patient care. (Q ,S ) Participates in conferences/discussions as needed and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate occupational therapy treatment plan. Instructs the patient and the family in occupational therapy procedures as part of providing patient and family education including written instructions as necessary. Attends various meetings and in-services as designated. (Q ,P ) Follows all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control. (Q) Meets or exceeds program productivity expectations. (F) Provides discipline specific coverage (following cross training ) within the Mary Free Bed system as requested. RCEB provides intake, assessment, diagnosis, and coordinates community-based services for over 25,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. RCEB envisions a future where persons with developmental disabilities are truly a part of the community. Persons with developmental disabilities receive supports and services they need to succeed. The supports and services change as the need changes. In our dream, children with developmental disabilities live with families in typical communities. Many choose to attend their neighborhood schools and play with neighborhood friends. Adults with developmental disabilities live in the residence of their choice – with family members, with friends, or with their spouse / significant other. They engage in activities of their choice – work, volunteering, education, training, or leisure. They have meaningful relationships with friends and coworkers and are seen as valuable, contributing members of their communities. SPECIFIC DUTIES : Performs evaluations, often in conjunction with a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) vendor, to assess mobility and functionality at the individuals residence to ensure the DME recommended will be effective in the individuals setting; Evaluates individual’s functional status (muscle function, endurance, visual coordination, written and verbal communication skills, self-care ability, work capacity, etc.). Evaluates home and other environments for hazards or barriers to more independent living. Completes documentation for DME funded by another entity (Letter of Medical Necessity) as needed or OT notes to support RCEB funding. Advocates and coordinates with private health insurance, Medicare, Medi-Cal, California Children’s Services (CCS), and other entities to ensure that required funding, is in whole or in part, in accordance with the applicable regulations for that entity. Provides additional documentation as requested to support funding of the DME by the appropriate entities, including supporting the appeals process if necessary. Communicates and coordinates with case managers to assure RCEB authorizations are completed and with DME vendors to ensure timely fulfillment of approved DME orders. Maintains communication with those involved on the individual’s team to promote coordinated and efficient care. Participates in the development of the individual program plan or individual family service plan as part of the interdisciplinary team as needed. Provides consultation to Case Managers, the individual served by RCEB, and caregivers to make recommendations related to an individual’s OT related needs. This may include: Review existing case files and other records, Recommend referral to appropriate community resource, Provide education on different therapies within the OT’s scope of practice Maintains awareness of existing OT services and therapy resources. Educates and collaborates with community OT’s to encourage development of relevant resources and services for individuals served by RCEB. Age Specific Responsibility

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department.  Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures.

Summary                                                                                                                                          

Assumes full responsibility for evaluating patients' need for occupational therapy.  Plans and executes individual treatment programs in accordance with the state of Michigan licensure and OT scope of practice.  Keeps treatment skills updated through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development. Perform job responsibilities in accordance with the program’s strategic objectives and goals to carry out organizational strategic objectives.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Staff will provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.  
  • Provides patient care. (Q)
  • Evaluates patient condition.
  • Establishes treatment goals in collaboration with patient and family as appropriate, and in collaboration with the treatment team. Treatment goals should be interdisciplinary and patient-centered whenever possible. Establishes written treatment plan, and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals.  Delegates responsibilities to occupational therapy assistants as appropriate.
  • Re-evaluates patient's status and effects of treatment.  Revises treatment plan as necessary Reviews revised goals withpatient and family as appropriate.
  • Evaluates patient's need for medical equipment and orders the appropriate equipment as necessary.  Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, patient's family, and health care workers on its use.
  • Participates in planning for patient discharge by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations.
  • Demonstrates competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities. (Q)
  • Documents patient's status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines. (Q)
  • Communicates with others to integrate occupational therapy treatment with all aspects of patient care. (Q,S)
  • Participates in conferences/discussions as needed and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate occupational therapy treatment plan.
  • Instructs the patient and the family in occupational therapy procedures as part of  providing patient and family education including written instructions as necessary.
  • Attends various meetings and in-services as designated. (Q,P)
  • Follows all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control. (Q)
  • Meets or exceeds program productivity expectations. (F)
  • Provides discipline specific coverage (following cross training) within the Mary Free Bed system as requested.(F,S)
  • Adheres to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers and members of the community. (Q,S,P)
  • Supports program operations as assigned. (Q, S, P, G, F)
  • May perform the following items to meet program or hospital needs.  (Q, S, P, G, F)
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff. (Q,P)
  • Serves as clinical instructor for occupational therapy students.  Supervises, teaches, and evaluates skills of students. Communicates with participating universities regarding skill levels of students. (S)
  • Participates in program development and/or research activities. 
  • Meet or exceed clinical outcome collection standards established by department leadership.
  • Meet or exceed clinical outcome performance/improvement goals established by department leadership in designated programs.

Customer Service Responsibilities                                                                                               

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement                                                                         

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications                                                                                                          

  • Graduate of an American Occupational Therapy Association accredited Occupational Therapy program.
  • Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Licensure is required in every US State and Territory theTherapist is practicing.  Licensure requirements should be met according to individual State laws.
  • Possesses and maintains BLS certification to meet department/program protocol.
