Counselor III (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) Job Overview Location/Schedule : This position is based out of the Garlington Health Center located in NE Portland, OR. The schedule for this position is Tuesday and Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., plus an hour on Monday, Thursday, and Friday for phone coaching. Position Description: The Counselor III (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) serves adults with chronic suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, and/or emotion dysregulation. This role involves suicide risk assessments and crisis management. This position must understand, appreciate, and respect the diversity and cultural differences within our Cascadia community. Manage patients who are at high risk for suicide and self-harm behaviors, including conducting acute risk assessments and engaging in crisis stabilization as needed. Provide weekly individual therapy and phone coaching to clients in the full DBT program. Teach weekly DBT skills groups to a broader range of clients. Teach and model DBT skills and prosocial behaviors while helping clients reestablish a sense of self. Respect client rights, maintain professional boundaries, and follow ethical guidelines. Provide clinical consultation to other Cascadia programs as need arises. Attend weekly a DBT consult group that provides training in DBT, case consultation, and therapeutic support. Provide weekly individual therapy to clients in the full DBT program. Provide DBT phone coaching within business hours on request to clients in the full DBT program. Teach weekly DBT skills groups with 5-12 clients per group, including coordinating care with other Cascadia therapists. Facilitate a biweekly DBT graduates’ group for clients who have completed at least a year of DBT. Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' mental health status and treatment needs. Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and therapeutic goals. Collaborate with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate integrated care and support for clients. Monitor clients' progress in treatment, evaluate outcomes, and adjust treatment plans as needed. Regulatory & Compliance: Comply with laws, regulations, policies, and procedures under which the program and company operates. Assist in crisis situations as appropriate; follow protocols and procedures in coordination with the treatment team. Respect and honor client rights and responsibilities and demonstrate professional boundaries and ethics. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation that ensures compliance with all agency policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations, and billing requirements. Understand safety regulations and evacuation procedures; participate in regular safety drills in compliance with program policies and procedures. Complete assigned employee training in compliance with program and company requirements. Provide guidance, support, and training to other staff in alignment with company mission and values. Participate in all scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and other departmental and company meetings. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: A Master’s Degree in a behavioral science field from an accredited college or university is required. Must demonstrate the competencies to become credentialed as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) as outlined in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR). Certification must be current and in compliance with the OAR’s. A Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential is preferred. Experience: A minimum of one years’ experience in the delivery of services to individuals with mental health challenges is required. Three years’ experience in the delivery of services to individuals with mental health challenges is preferred. Specialized Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Expert level written and verbal communication skills Able to conduct a Mental Status assessment and formulate a diagnosis according to the most current DSM. Understand recovery model, motivational interviewing, illness management and recovery. Thorough knowledge of evidence-based practices, and strength-based case management philosophies and strategies Operate computer hardware and software (including EMR software) at a level needed to effectively perform job functions. Enter and retrieve data. Other: Must have the ability to travel to multiple locations throughout the Portland Metro area. Working Conditions Environmental: Work is performed in one or more of the following: clinical office, acute care settings and community setting including client residences, correctional facilities, shelters, hospitals, public places and other social service sites. Meal periods and breaks are subject to interruption. Universal Precautions and remaining alert to the environment are critical to address the potential for violent behavior, exposure to disease, biohazards, noise, and contaminants. Mental Demands: The work assigned is diverse and involves addressing new and unusual circumstances. The work regularly involves a degree of unpredictability and disruption of planned tasks requiring a flexible time management approach. In addition, this position requires exercising sound judgment.
