Job Description

About Audubon

The National Audubon Society is a leading nonprofit conservation organization with 120 years of science-based, community-driven impact, dedicated to protecting birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow. Birds are powerful indicators of our planet’s health, acting as sentinels that warn us of environmental change and inspire action. Audubon works across the Western Hemisphere, driven by the understanding that what is good for birds is good for the planet. Through a collaborative, bipartisan approach across habitats, borders, and the political spectrum, Audubon drives meaningful and lasting conservation outcomes. With 800 staff and over 1.9 million supporters, Audubon is a dynamic and ever-growing force committed to ensuring a better planet for both birds and people for generations to come. Learn more at www.audubon.org and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @audubonsociety.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President, Government Affairs, the Director for the Audubon Action Fund and U.S. Government Affairs will be responsible for the leadership and delivery of Audubon Action Fund programs and supporting the development of conservation champions for Audubon policy priorities on Capitol Hill and beyond.

Based in Washington, D.C., this role will be critical to organizational efforts to implement transformative policy solutions and mobilize the most effective conservation network in America turning policy ideas into real protections for birds and the places they need. The Director will work with conservation leaders across Audubon’s Flight Plan pillars, with and through federal, regional, and state teams to advance mission aligned conservation policy priorities.

The Director, Audubon Action Fund, will bring political acumen, organizing experience, and additional capacity to build support for successful advancement of key conservation policies. The Action Fund focuses on non-electoral programing and engagement as part of a strategic lobbying strategy. The Director will be a public advocate for conservation and the Action Fund agenda with funders, decision makers, and other stakeholders.

As Director, U.S. Government Affairs, the role includes leadership to ensure Audubon builds and maintains meaningful and influential working relationships with congressional offices and federal agencies. The Director will bring a keen focus on priority issues and decision makers, and identify opportunities to cultivate meaningful strategic partnerships with legislators, staff, and agency officials.

The person arrives during an exciting time of organizational growth and innovation driven by its leadership, and advanced every day by dedicated, highly collaborative Audubon team members in Washington, DC and across the country.

This position is classified as hybrid, in accordance with Audubon’s “Where We Work” Policy. Hybrid employees are expected to work in an Audubon office every Monday and Tuesday and an additional two days each month of the employee’s choosing. Candidates should be located within commuting distance of Audubon's offices in Washington, DC.
