Apply Job Type Full-time Description SUMMARY: This position as an Environmental Specialist I / Geologist is one of full-time employment in our Waste/Groundwater Division. The employee will participate in environmental compliance and field investigation activities. Work assignments will be mainly from our Providence Baton Rouge office, with some assigned project work throughout the Gulf Coast Region. The need to be able to travel to project locations is expected. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities): Bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, geology, toxicology, civil or geotechnical engineering or related discipline. 0 to 2 years of relevant experience. Geologist or Engineer-in-Training registration in the State of Louisiana, preferred. Ability to follow detailed work plans and instructions, document fieldwork, manage worksite tasks for subcontractors, and work independently is required. Training and experience in the installation of groundwater monitoring wells is preferred, as is the knowledge of the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) for describing and logging soil core samples. Familiarity with direct push, rotary wash, and soil auger sampling, drilling and well completion methods preferred. A general understanding of the laboratory analytical procedures used for testing groundwater and soil samples is preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record. Ability to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Log and sample boreholes and the installation of groundwater monitoring wells around heavy equipment. Assist with field implementation of groundwater monitoring programs, including the installation and maintenance of monitoring wells, data collection, and analysis. Participate in performing hydrogeological assessments to evaluate groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and remediation strategies. Contribute to environmental site assessments and investigations to evaluate potential impacts of solid and hazardous waste on soil, groundwater, and surface water resources. Keep precise field notes and documentation including logbooks of all field investigations and sampling activities. Assist senior professionals in preparing comprehensive reports, technical documents, and presentations summarizing findings, recommendations, and regulatory compliance status. Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, regulatory specialists, and project managers, to achieve project goals and deliverables. Embrace technical training opportunities and remaining knowledgeable on current industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to environmental science and waste management. Assist in the preparation of technical reports and perform spreadsheet-based data analysis, including the creation of graphic illustrations to support findings and recommendations. Utilize computer software and hardware to communicate via email, develop presentations, and produce well logs and well construction diagrams. Create and interpret potentiometric surface maps, isopachous maps of drilled strata, and geologic profiles and cross-sections to support subsurface evaluations and project planning. Forward the Summary of Evidence, reversal or withdrawal to assigned reviewer, make edits recommended by reviewer. Upload appeals documents into Medicaid's Electronic Case Record and upload the documents to the Division of Administrative Law/LDH SharePoint site. Notate the Case Notes indicating that the uploading has been completed and notify the Centralized Appeals Unit's representative assigned to track the appeal that the necessary documents have been uploaded and mailed to the appellant where applicable. Monitor the reviewed cases for corrective actions taken by field staff. Determine if all required corrective actions have been taken and email the field staff if further corrective actions are required.   • Geologist or Engineer-in-Training registration in the State of Louisiana, preferred.
  • Ability to follow detailed work plans and instructions, document fieldwork, manage worksite tasks for subcontractors, and work independently is required.
  • Training and experience in the installation of groundwater monitoring wells is preferred, as is the knowledge of the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) for describing and logging soil core samples.
  • Familiarity with direct push, rotary wash, and soil auger sampling, drilling and well completion methods preferred.
  • A general understanding of the laboratory analytical procedures used for testing groundwater and soil samples is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training certification strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Log and sample boreholes and the installation of groundwater monitoring wells around heavy equipment.
  • Assist with field implementation of groundwater monitoring programs, including the installation and maintenance of monitoring wells, data collection, and analysis.
  • Participate in performing hydrogeological assessments to evaluate groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and remediation strategies.
  • Contribute to environmental site assessments and investigations to evaluate potential impacts of solid and hazardous waste on soil, groundwater, and surface water resources.
  • Keep precise field notes and documentation including logbooks of all field investigations and sampling activities. Assist senior professionals in preparing comprehensive reports, technical documents, and presentations summarizing findings, recommendations, and regulatory compliance status.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, regulatory specialists, and project managers, to achieve project goals and deliverables.
  • Embrace technical training opportunities and remaining knowledgeable on current industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to environmental science and waste management.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports and perform spreadsheet-based data analysis, including the creation of graphic illustrations to support findings and recommendations.
  • Utilize computer software and hardware to communicate via email, develop presentations, and produce well logs and well construction diagrams.
  • Create and interpret potentiometric surface maps, isopachous maps of drilled strata, and geologic profiles and cross-sections to support subsurface evaluations and project planning.
