Manager, Software Engineering, Science-logo
Manager, Software Engineering, Science
Chan ZuckerbergRedwood City, CA
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015 to help solve some of society's toughest challenges - from eradicating disease and improving education to addressing the needs of our local communities. Our mission is to build a more inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone. The Team CZI supports the science and technology that will make it possible to help scientists cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of this century. While this may seem like an audacious goal, in the last 100 years, biomedical science has made tremendous strides in understanding biological systems, advancing human health, and treating disease. Achieving our mission will only be possible if scientists are able to better understand human biology. To that end, we have identified four grand challenges that will unlock the mysteries of the cell and how cells interact within systems - paving the way for new discoveries that will change medicine in the decades that follow: Building an AI-based virtual cell model to predict and understand cellular behavior Developing state-of-the-art imaging systems to observe living cells in action Instrumenting tissues to better understand inflammation, a key driver of many diseases Engineering and harnessing the immune system for early detection, prevention, and treatment of disease CZI's work in science includes grantmaking programs, open-source software development, and close collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network. The CZ Biohub Network includes the San Francisco, Chicago, and New York Biohubs as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. CZI also collaborates with institutional partners like the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University. Join us in accelerating science. The Opportunity As a manager of software engineering in the Science Technology Organization, you would be leading a group of highly motivated and talented engineers to build cloud applications on latest technologies that scientists rely on every day in ways that enable them to draw more meaningful conclusions, or biological insights, more quickly. By making our tools, methods, and quality data sets accessible to a diverse set of scientists, clinicians, and patient communities, we contribute to the rate at which biomedical science can advance human health. The Data Services team manages and processes scientific datasets specifically designed to enable biological modeling. It is responsible for data validation, wrangling, testing, storage, and retrieval. We handle over 89 million unique cells worth of single cell transcriptomic data, over 15 thousand cryoET tomograms that are in imaging datasets as large as 20TB and counting, and will be expanding to support larger scale and additional imaging, sequencing, and literature modalities. Our resources provide access to open source data that is structured and used by tens of thousands of scientists each month to quickly query and form hypotheses on understanding how genetic variants in cells impact disease risk, define drug toxicities, and eventually discover better therapies. As an Engineering Manager on the Data Services- Pipelines team, you will help manage all the data pipeline needs for our platforms, CELLxGENE Discover, CryoET, as well as the new platform we are building that has a focus on data for AI and the virtual cell. This would include data ingestion, validation, and transformation needs in order to enable scientists to further interrogate our very large and growing corpus of data. You will enable the ingestion of billions of cells worth of data for the purpose of AI modeling, leading the team to think more cohesively and strategically on how we might enable the ingestion and curation of scientific data at scale. This role will lead a software engineering team, working with Product Managers, UX Designers and Researchers, Data Scientists, Application Scientists, Computational Biologists and possibly other roles and partners to design, build and maintain data pipelines for our scientific data. Responsibilities would include creating and maintaining data pipelines that support multiple CZI products over time. Products have included: CryoET Data Portal- The portal provides biologists and developers open access to high-quality, standardized, annotated data they can readily use to retrain or develop new annotation models and algorithms CZ CELLxGENE- A rich data platform with interfaces that enable any computational or biological expert to understand the molecular function of cells and tissues Virtual Cell Platform- A platform for scientists to build, collaborate and contribute to the AI powered virtual cells which would enable scientists to explore the molecular underpinnings of human health and diseases No prior biology experience is required for this role. You will have the opportunity to pair with Computational Biologists to develop solutions for our users and be able to learn about biology from experts on our team. What You'll Do Lead a backend engineering team who develops and supports data pipelines, migrations, and schema . Work cross-functionally with internal and external partners to develop and deliver on the roadmap and plan the long-term strategy for the team. Participate in and encourage appropriate software development practices to deliver frequent value to our users and enable continuous feedback loops. Guide the team on technical decisions and oversee that best practices are being followed. Ensure quality in the work we deliver. Be a hands-on manager to the team. Provide mentoring and career development support to direct reports. Hire and onboard engineers to fill resource gaps while building out a diverse team. What You'll Bring 5+ years of experience in Software Engineering, with 3+ years of engineering leadership experience (as a people manager). Worked with an interdisciplinary team to shape product requirements and designs, and deliver software solutions. Experience building data pipelines deployed in production environments. Ability to coach and develop engineers' skills and careers while creating an inclusive environment. Ability to contribute to software design discussions and decisions. Please note, posting was originally posted on 1/22/2025 and the following was updated The Annis Water Resource Institute (AWRI) seeks passionate and energetic environmental educators to engage students in hands-on, place-based learning experiences onboard its research vessels and in its indoor/outdoor programming. Instructors are assigned to the W. G. Jackson (docks in Muskegon), the D. J. Angus (docks in Grand Haven), or the land-based program, or may serve in a combination of roles. AWRI anticipates hiring one or more instructors for the 2025 season, based on programming demand. These positions report to AWRI's Education Specialist. AWRI is a multidisciplinary research organization within Grand Valley State University's (GVSU) College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with a mission to integrate research, education, and outreach to enhance and preserve freshwater resources. AWRI's outreach program delivers hands-on, investigative education about water to the public, with special emphasis on youth. Our floating learning laboratories and landside programming connect people in West Michigan with local water resources through experiential learning about water chemistry, lake food webs, human impacts on water quality, and more. Participants aboard an educational cruise have an opportunity to serve as freshwater scientists, collecting data and observations about the water bodies they sail through. Since 1986, nearly 200,000 people have experienced hands-on science on Lake Michigan and adjoining waters through these programs. Individuals from all backgrounds, including from underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates must be able to effectively engage with students, colleagues, and community members with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. Position Summary Science Instructors are responsible for conducting educational programs in the outreach program, including seasonal programs aboard the research vessels as well as landside programming and special events. The program on the vessels is delivered by two Science Instructors that team-teach. Instructors guide participants through water quality tests and other observations to compare the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics of Lake Michigan and smaller inland lakes. Along the way, the Science Instructors also share place-based information about the history and current conditions of the lakes and their watersheds, as well as related research of AWRI scientists. We also offer a land-based complement to the onboard cruises, which engages students in place-based learning on AWRI's grounds about a variety of related water topics. The landside curriculum includes activities developed by AWRI staff, as well as draws from programs such as Project WET, Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS), Healthy Water Healthy People, and the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program. The outreach season is from mid-April through mid-October. Training for the 2025 season commences in mid-March to early April 2025, with programs beginning in mid-April. These are part-time, seasonal positions. Work hours will vary depending on the program schedule and instructor preferences. A typical schedule is 2-3 days a week during the spring and fall seasons, with fewer days during the summer. There are generally two cruises per day lasting 2.5 hours each. Typically, programs run during normal business hours on weekdays, with occasional evening and Saturday programs. Instructors cannot work more than 29 hours per week. Primary Duties Provide instruction during onboard aquatic science cruises on the W.G. Jackson and/or D.J. Angus for grades 4-12, college, and adult; and/or indoor/outdoor land-based programming. Deliver AWRI's established curriculum as well as offer responsive place-based/site-specific commentary and learning opportunities. Ensure that curriculum objectives are met and that participants have meaningful learning experiences. Adapt the program to the needs of each group, weather conditions, and any special circumstances. Foster a welcoming and accessible learning environment for all visitors, and uphold GVSU's values. Work with the rest of the team of Science Instructors to set up instructional materials before a program, reset educational spaces before the next program, and maintain educational supplies and materials. Complete onboard safety training, assist in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel during education programs, and be prepared to assist in an emergency. Attend outreach team meetings, including participating in pre-season curriculum training and set-up, as well as post-season wrap-up. Contribute to the development of support materials and continually improving the outreach program. Participate in other outreach efforts such as teacher workshops, open houses, and special events when possible. Stay current on water issues and continue to enrich their aquatic science knowledge base. Represent GVSU and AWRI in a professional manner. Abide by all rules, regulations, and requirements for GVSU employees, including COVID-19 policies. Perform other duties as required/assigned by supervisor. Required Qualifications and Education Passion for environmental education, experiential learning, and connecting people with local waters. Demonstrated ability to work with students in a group setting and adapt curricula to a variety of age levels, learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds. Teaching experience in formal or informal contexts (e.g. environmental education, outdoor recreation, interpretation, classroom teaching, or related field). Proficiency in best practices of outdoor education and place-based learning, and demonstrated experience in maintaining safe learning environments. Commitment to the mission of AWRI. For teaching on the vessels: Instructors are required to participate in the Random Drug Testing Program during the vessel season, as well as pass a pre-employment drug test (per Coast Guard regulations). Preferred Qualifications and Education Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a field related to aquatic science (such as environmental studies, biology, natural resources, etc.) or education (such as science education, or teaching certificate). Encouraged to complete CPR and First Aid certification (employer-provided). Candidates should be able to: Spend multiple hours outdoors in all types of weather (including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind) and on variable waters. Stand and walk for the duration of a typical 2.5 hour program and pre/post program prep. There is no seating on the vessels and most outdoor learning spaces; seating is available in the indoor classroom. Stand and walk on occasionally uneven ground, primarily asphalt and grass. Lift up to 25 pounds and assist in emergency procedures. Hear crew members and onboard participants that might be out of direct sight-line. President, Virtual Cell Models Program, Science
Our vision is to build the future of science by leveraging advances in AI alongside biomedical research. The Opportunity This leadership opportunity offers a chance to lead CZI's ambitious effort to transform cell biology - shifting from 90% experimental and 10% computational work to the reverse ratio over the next decade. As initiative leader, you will guide the development of AI-driven virtual cell models that predict and generate novel cell states, leveraging CZI's significant investment in computational infrastructure (including a 1000 H100 GPU cluster) and unparalleled biological datasets. You'll devise and execute strategies to build generative AI models that learn the "accessible space" and predict cell types, structure, function, and dynamics-all while maintaining rigorous experimental validation and addressing biologically relevant questions that currently defy available methodologies. The leader will coordinate across multiple domains, from genomics to proteomics, integrating static and dynamic cellular data, establishing robust data standards, and fostering collaboration between computational and experimental teams. This position offers a rare opportunity to establish a new paradigm in biological research that will dramatically accelerate both our fundamental understanding of biology and the development of novel cell therapies, while ensuring these powerful tools remain accessible to the broader scientific community and our family of institutes as we make progress towards achieving our goals as a science philanthropy. The President of the Virtual Cell Models program will join our Science Leadership team, reporting to our Head of Science. What You'll Do Leadership & Vision Direct the overall scientific vision and strategy for the Virtual Cell Models program, including key decisions about key biological questions, model organisms, cell types, and the systems our organization will prioritize Build, lead and manage a major initiative within CZI, including recruiting and inspiring world-class scientists and engineers, organizing this initiative for optimal success, and driving teams to execute on multiple complex projects, often on accelerated timeframes Maintain scientific excellence across all data types and computational approaches used in this initiative Ensure integration of diverse biological data into cohesive, multi-scale models that advance understanding of cells and their function Develop clear roadmaps and timely plans for resource allocation, prioritization, and our strategic direction for building virtual cell models Foster innovation and collaboration across experimental and computational domains internally at CZI's institutes and externally with the science community Skillfully manage collaborations across multiple institutions, balancing immediate deliverables with long-term ambitious goals Effectively leverage CZI's compute infrastructure including a 1000 H100 GPU cluster to maximize scientific discovery and lead the development computationally driven biological research AI/ML × BIO Imperatives Guide the organization's data generation requirements, standards, and quality control processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams Effectively drive and coordinate projects between experimental and computational teams Drive the organization's approach to building, buying, and/or partnering with external collaborators to develop critical technologies Report progress against concrete milestones and deliverables to the broader organization, including the senior leadership team Strategic Accountability Serve as the intellectual owner of the initiative's direction and priorities Create the vision for how the Virtual Cell will transform biological research Build and maintain CZI's competitive differentiation and industry-leading position, and ensure its outputs advance understanding of human disease Skillfully communicate CZI's work and advancements externally as a public-facing spokesperson for the work Identify and develop strategic partnerships when beneficial Maintain a sharp focus on applications and opportunities to advance understanding of human disease What You'll Bring Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Computational Biology, or a related field with 20+ years of relevant experience Demonstrated background in AI/ML approaches to biological data analysis, including a deep understanding of diverse experimental methodologies across genomics, proteomics, and cell biology Significant scientific leadership experience overseeing cross-functional technical teams in academia and/or industry and facilitating strategic collaborations with partners in the field Proven track record of success in recruiting world-class talent, managing large teams and budgets efficiently and effectively, and delivering large-scale ML projects in computational biology or healthcare on time and within budget Deep expertise in modern deep learning architectures, particularly for multimodal data generation, integration, and standards, as well as biological sequence modeling Comprehensive understanding of cellular biology and experience working with complex biological datasets such as single-cell technologies and imaging analysis Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire internal teams, collaborate, engage, and influence diverse stakeholders, and communicate Background in developing foundation models or large language models Track record of impactful research publications and patents Experience with high-performance computing, distributed systems, and cloud-based infrastructure Compensation The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $794,000 - $1,270,000.
