Group Exercise Instructor

Under the direction of the Senior Healthy Living Director and/or the Healthy Living Manager, the Group Fitness Instructor will teach classes that are aimed at improving the overall fitness levels of our members. In addition, this position is responsible for the following duties: Essential Functions / Job Duties: Leads engaging class experience that is challenging, yet safe, and able to be modified to fit the needs of the target audience. Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA. Observes and adjusts approach during class to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture. Ensures that all necessary equipment is set up for class, and inspect equipment to be sure that it is in safe working order. Ensures that class is set up no more than 10 minutes before start time and broken down no more than 10 minutes past class end time including ensuring fitness room is clean and equipment is returned to its original location. Records attendance and/or Checks-in participants in order to maintain attendance of each class using Group Ex Pro app or desktop website. Uses the Sub Board on Group Ex Pro to request subs for classes, and is available to sub other instructor’s classes as needed. All class subs will need to be approved by a supervisor. Monitors that fitness room is neat and equipment used during a class is returned to its proper location in an organized manner before leaving. Instructors are responsible for providing their own music suitable for a family setting. Reports injuries to Healthy Living Director and/or Executive Director and complete the proper paperwork immediately following any injury. This information must be reported to the Human Resources Department within 24 hours of the incident. Serious injuries must be called into Human Resources immediately. Ensures that there is a substitute instructor if you are unable to teach your assigned class. Partners with Healthy Living Director to develop special events that promote fitness and meet community fitness needs. Other duties, as assigned. Position Profile: An individual who is a people person who likes to interact with members of various ages and stages in life. An individual who demonstrates compassion and caring for all individuals that he/she comes into contact with on a daily basis. A trendsetter who will stay current and leading-edge with trends in health and fitness to provide exceptional programs and services to our members and team. Qualifications, Skills and Abilities Job / Position Requirements : High School Diploma or GED or min of 2 years related Fitness experienced. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact with individuals at all levels. Bi-lingual preferred, English and Spanish (fluent in both languages). Knowledge of the principles related to the improvement of overall fitness levels. Certificates and Licenses: CPR Certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire. Current National Certification from one of the following organizations: ASFA, AFAA, ACSM, ACE, ISSA, NETA or AFPA. In lieu of one of the above listed National Certifications, instructor must complete an approved specialty certification- that includes a practical portion. Such certifications may include, but are not limited to: Les Mills, Mad Dogg, Beach Body, Mossa, Zumba, Yoga Alliance, Mat Pilates, Pilates Reformer, Aquatic Exercise Assn, Silver Sneakers, Schwinn, Yogafit, TRX, MX4/MX4 Active, etc. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit to and satisfactorily clear a thorough Level II fingerprinting background screening and drug test. As a Drug-Free Workplace, all new hires must successfully complete a urinalysis within 72 hours of notice. Failure to complete the drug test within this timeframe will automatically disqualify you from employment. Make sure room is in order for the next class to begin. Answer any questions/concerns participants may have. Solicit feedback from participants about the class. Additional Responsibilities: Make sure that class begins and ends promptly. If necessary, make adjustments to the flow of the class to ensure adherence to the schedule. If the Group Exercise Instructor is teaching the last class of the day, please follow proper closing procedures as outlined by the Group Exercise Director for the individual facility. In the event that a Group Exercise Instructor cannot fulfill a scheduled class, it is his/her responsibility to find a qualified/approved substitute and notify the Group Exercise Director if there is a problem finding a substitute. Group Exercise Instructors must be dependable and consistent in their class schedules. Anyone committing to teach a class should make all arrangements so that substitutes or cancellations are a rare occurrence. Attend all required staff meetings as necessary. Ensure that proper time recording procedures are followed correctly and in a timely manner. Prepare any incident and/or witness reports as necessary in the event of accidents. Maintain a positive and professional attitude towards his/her responsibilities, fellow employees, and members. Promote Gold’s Gym and GGX as much as possible.
