Job Description

Construction Contract Administrator / Paralegal

JOB DESCRIPTION

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Fort Myer Construction Corporation (FMCC) is one of the most established and respected heavy-civil contractors in the Mid-Atlantic. Founded in 1972 and built from humble beginnings into an ENR Top 400 contractor, we have spent more than fifty years building and maintaining the infrastructure that the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia rely on every day - streets, highways, bridges, streetscapes, utilities, and electrical systems. We operate the only two asphalt plants in the District and provide design-build delivery, 24/7 emergency response, and winter weather services for the region's departments of transportation.

As a proud Certified Business Enterprise (CBE) with a skilled, union-backed workforce of roughly 900 people, FMCC is experiencing tremendous growth - and our Legal department is growing with it. We offer a robust benefits package, including 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage in many cases, free on-site parking, and a fast-paced, team-focused environment where your work directly shapes the region's future. If you take pride in hard work, value family and loyalty, and want your contributions to be seen and rewarded, FMCC is the place for you.

Summary:

FMCC is seeking a detail-driven, highly motivated Contracts Paralegal to support our in-house Legal team and report directly to the Senior Contract Specialist and Division Leader, General Counsel. You will be the backbone of contract administration across our public and private projects - managing, reviewing, and maintaining contracts and subcontracts and keeping our deals accurate, compliant, and on schedule.

This role is perfect for a sharp, self-motivated professional who takes pride in precision, works well independently, and thrives as part of a close-knit team. If you like owning the details that keep big projects moving, we want to meet you.

What your day looks like:

  • Oversee contract and subcontract documentation, ensuring accuracy across every legal and operational deliverable.
  • Manage conformed record documents and partner with field and project staff to monitor progress and contract compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and client representatives to keep information and execution flowing smoothly.
  • Exercise independent judgment on document control, risk identification, and compliance review for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with internal departments and leadership - including the AR Manager, Estimating, Procurement, Project Management, and Field Operations - while engaging with clients such as DDOT, DGS, NPS, VDOT, SHA, WSCC, DC Water, and private developers.
  • Draft and review contracts and subcontracts, ensuring all terms are accurate, compliant, and aligned with company standards.
  • Interface with the General Counsel before finalizing contracts, implementing changes, or addressing potential legal issues.
  • Communicate with public agencies and private entities to clarify contract terms and resolve issues promptly.
  • Maintain a centralized system for tracking contract versions, change orders, approvals, renewals, and amendments.
  • Prepare, process, and track subcontractor change orders and payment waivers, ensuring documentation is complete and deadlines are met.
  • Assist in preparing project-specific documents such as Job Information Sheets, contract exhibits, and change orders.
  • Provide guidance and training to project teams on contractual processes, compliance obligations, and risk-mitigation strategies.
  • Support Legal and Compliance in audits, reporting, and investigations of contract-related discrepancies.
  • Support proposal development by preparing documents, tracking deadlines, and reviewing deliverables for legal and contractual accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • Education- Associate's degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience- Minimum 2 years in a paralegal or legal-administrative role, preferably in construction law or infrastructure projects.
  • Contracts knowledge- Strong working knowledge of construction contracts, including American Institute of Architects (AIA) forms and vendor agreements.
  • Bilingual a plus- Spanish/English fluency is a strong advantage in our diverse, team-focused environment.
  • Proficient in document drafting and review, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • A self-motivated, independent worker who is also a skilled team player.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; able to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and contract/document-management tools.
  • Familiarity with Billy (insurance certificate management), Procore (project management), and Vista by Trimble (construction ERP) is a strong plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Business, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Paralegal certification (NALA, NFPA, or another nationally recognized credential).
  • Experience with public-sector agencies such as DDOT, DGS, NPS, VDOT, SHA, WSCC, and DC Water, or with private developers and general contractors.
  • Familiarity with federal and municipal contract-compliance regulations and reporting procedures.

Working conditions:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Finger dexterity for extensive amounts of typing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts).
  • Regularly standing for extended periods.
  • Performing in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions.
  • Occasionally climbing stairs.
  • Using personal and/or company vehicles for travel.
  • Reaching above shoulder heights and below the waist.
  • Exposure to constant noise.
  • Frequently walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.

This position will report to the General Counsel.

Note: This is an on-site position and requires the ability to work in the office during standard business hours. Remote or hybrid arrangements are not available for this role.

Note: This position is considered Safety-Sensitive, and therefore subject to various schedule and unscheduled screenings for controlled substances.
