In this position, you will assist an ALS patient with his daily living needs, provide compassionate care, and generally increase their quality of his life. Responsibilities may include monitoring vital signs, assisting with hygiene needs, and medication reminders, closely monitoring breathing and using cough assist and breathing equipment. The ideal candidate is compassionate, reliable, and willing to be an advocate for their patients. This position will work Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Specific training on this patient will be provided through shadow shifts with the Mon-Fri caregiver and the patient's spouse. The Nursing Student Internship (NSI) at Avera Heart Hospital is a 10-week, full-time, paid internship during the summer. The NSI program will provide you the experience to expand your clinical skills while working in partnership with a designated Registered Nurse preceptor. The NSI program provides students with the ability to learn directly from health care workers.

NSI applicants must be enrolled in an accredited RN program (Associate or Bachelor degree) and have participated in an academic clinical experience. At the time of the internship, NSI students must be within 1 or 2 semesters of their graduation date (Winter 2026 or Spring 2027).
