Key Responsibilities Conducts thorough patrols of park facilities, trails, and sites to ensure visitor compliance with relevant rules and regulations; utilizes various City vehicles (truck, bicycle, kayak, etc) to move between sites and carry out job duties; performs visual assessments to monitor park resource usage and maintain public safety. Qualifications Experience: One year or two seasons of park experience in public relations, natural science, open-space. Experience or background in security work also is preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age. Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Certification in First Aid/CPR is required within the first six months of employment. Environmental and Physical Demands: The Park Ranger works outside year-round in a variety of weather and environmental conditions such as heat, cold, wind, sun, rain, and snow. This position is exposed to pollen, dust allergens, and other elements. Work is performed on terrain ranging from uneven forest paths to water bodies and requires the ability to drive, bicycle, kayak and/or walk over a multitude of surfaces. The Park Ranger is responsible for ensuring safety, providing security, and engaging with the community. This role requires adept communication abilities and involves a diverse range of tasks, such as safeguarding park resources, ensuring the security of special events, and providing safety education. This position is performed primarily outdoors and involves year-round work in all different weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough patrols of park facilities, trails, and sites to ensure visitor compliance with relevant rules and regulations; utilizes various City vehicles (truck, bicycle, kayak, etc) to move between sites and carry out job duties; performs visual assessments to monitor park resource usage and maintain public safety.

  • Embraces the role of providing educational sessions on safety and interpretation to enrich the experience of park visitors and ensure their well-being; takes proactive measures by issuing warnings for violations of municipal park ordinances, education codes, and other regulatory guidelines.

  • Plays a vital role in managing park operations; opens and closes park areas; executes patrol shifts covering various times of the day, evenings, weekends, and holidays; contributes to the success of special events.

  • Compiles comprehensive informational and performance reports to contribute to the enhancement of the ranger program's effectiveness.

  • Demonstrates quick and decisive responsiveness to emergencies, coordinating efficient and well-communicated responses, including notification of the Olathe Police department when necessary.

Qualifications

Experience: One year or two seasons of park experience in public relations, natural science, open-space. Experience or background in security work also is preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age.

Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. Certification in First Aid/CPR is required within the first six months of employment.

Environmental and Physical Demands: The Park Ranger works outside year-round in a variety of weather and environmental conditions such as heat, cold, wind, sun, rain, and snow. This position is exposed to pollen, dust allergens, and other elements. Work is performed on terrain ranging from uneven forest paths to water bodies and requires the ability to drive, bicycle, kayak and/or walk over a multitude of surfaces. Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds as part of park patrol and work in distracting situations including high volume public areas.
