Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to join our team! The Environmental Specialist I is responsible for having detailed knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance and must have strong organizational skills and a natural ability to work well and coordinate with a wide variety of field and office personnel. This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position.
What You'll Do:
- Support environmental compliance across the assigned region of company construction projects and facilities, including construction-related permits, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, stormwater, and spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plan requirements.
- Provide education and training to company personnel on applicable environmental compliance requirements, including inspections, record-keeping, and reporting.
- Conduct environmental program audits at company construction projects and facilities for compliance with federal, state, and local permits and regulations, and consistency with corporate policies.
- Assess inspection activities for timely compliance, quality, and effectiveness.
- Audit recordkeeping for compliance, completeness, and accuracy.
- Identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Determine corrective actions to enhance and improve compliance.
- Support project startup through permit onboarding, initial erosion, and sedimentation control installation assessment, SPCC implementation, and establishment of waste management practices.
- Provide technical, procedural, and policy support for environmental construction and operation permits.
- Provide environmental support for engineering, construction, and operations personnel as needed.
- Assist with Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) and Quality training programs for environmental awareness.
- Review environmental safety, health and emergency action plans, and programs to assure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
- Respond to and determine appropriate corrective actions for spills and other environmental concerns, including required reporting, cleanup activities, and disposal of waste materials.
- Track regulatory issues, including notices of violation, and assist with obtaining resolutions.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis efforts related to environmental regulatory issues as needed.
- Support the Director, Environmental Compliance as needed to develop and improve company policies, procedures, and training programs to elevate environmental awareness and compliance.
Must-Haves:
- 2+ years of experience in an environmental compliance role, including oversight of construction projects involving erosion and sediment control/construction stormwater practices and permit projects or 6+ years without a bachelor's degree.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, including Teams and SharePoint.
- The aptitude to work collaboratively and succeed in a team environment.
- Ability to effectively communicate expectations, goals, and concerns to project team members and subcontractors.
- Ability to work independently, concurrently manage duties and responsibilities on multiple projects, prioritize, and meet assigned deadlines.
- Skilled at reading and understanding civil engineering plans.
- Strong oral and written communication/interpersonal skills.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience in the utility-scale solar/ renewable energy industry.
Education and Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field is preferred.
- Professional certification in erosion and sediment control/stormwater pollution prevention plans or can obtain within 3 months of hire is required.
- Must possess and retain a current valid driver's license is required.
- Master's degree in environmental science or related field is preferred.
- HAZWOPER Certification is preferred.
- OSHA-10 or greater is preferred.
- First-Aid and CPR training is preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Demand:
- Travel up to 60% to all project sites.
- Position requires travel by vehicle and working remotely.
- Must be able to comply with all company safety standards and procedures including OSHA requirements.
- Must follow organization policies and procedures.
- Individuals in this position work in an outdoor environment and must be able to tolerate all climates.
- Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer, for extended periods of time.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, lift and grab; reach with hands and arms; push and pull; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk, see clearly, and hear.
