Group Summary: The Magna Exteriors portfolio of products includes access systems such as liftgates, exterior trim, modular systems, front-end modules including fascia, active aerodynamic systems and other lightweight structural components for automotive, commercial truck and other industrial markets. Job Responsibilities: Senior Development Engineer wanted in Troy, Michigan to lead the development of new materials technologies for Magna's Sustainability goals. Support the Core Product Manager in analyzing global and automotive trends affecting vehicle exteriors. Execute R&D projects per the Innovation Development Process. Coordinate with MEA-ESE's global PPD, Business Development, WCM, ESE, customers, and suppliers. Track project issues, costs, and timing. Develop polymer processing expertise in thermoplastics, thermosets, injection, compression, and coatings. Advise on polymer equipment selection and installation. Share polymer processing developments. Conduct materials research and prototype testing. Prepare engineering estimates for manufacturing and capital costs. Apply for patents and work with legal staff. Prepare reports on technical, timing, and budget aspects. Maintain project data in a shared folder. Provide technical presentations and seminars. Submit capital requests. Support SR&ED claims. Coordinate resources to meet project needs. Make cross-functional decisions for supplier and production facility projects. Interface with Magna divisions and external customers for new business opportunities. Develop new technology and products with other Magna groups. Increase Technical Readiness Level of carbon-negative materials, balancing properties with CO2e emissions for fiber-reinforced thermoplastics; scale up lab-to-plant processes. Build relationships for sustainability, ADAS/LIDAR, and photovoltaic projects. Act as an expert on carbon-negative fillers and renewable materials. Guide carbon neutrality goals by 2030, updating the decarbonization plan for Active Aero, FEM, and other systems. Lead carbon-negative filler readiness through validation and scale-up. Solve issues like odor and smoke, and facilitate OEM material approval. Engineer low carbon footprint resins with partners and academia. Mentor GREENTOWN GO MOVE 2022 participants to reduce vehicle environmental impact and qualify materials with OEM support. Develop LIDAR covers for ESE North America. Co-mentor researchers at OntarioTech University and MAGNA ESE. Conduct research on emerging topics using think tanks and scale-up solutions for In-Mold-PUR paint coating to replace conventional automotive paint, engaging with the MAGNA EU team.; balance material and product requirements for durability and performance with piece cost; use knowledge of compound and injection-compression molding processes; use knowledge of processing solutions, including polymer additives, thermokinetic mixing, and vibration-assisted molding for thermally sensitive materials; use CAE software (SpinFire, Moldflow); use surface modification techniques to improve coating adhesion and durability for ADAS/LIDAR, class A/In-Mold-PUR, and glazing applications; develop PFAS-free coatings with features such as hydrophilic, anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, and heating properties; use coating methods such as PVD, dip-coating, and spray-coating; use optical test equipment and conduct wind tunnel evaluations under harsh weather conditions to assess coatings; conduct mechanical and analytical testing, interpret results, and utilize Design of Experiments (DOE); use equipment such as DSC, TGA, FTIR, SEM, optical spectrometry as well as ASTM, SAE, ORIGIN, and MINITAB. Perform other duties as required. Requires a Master's degree in Engineering Management or Industrial and Systems Engineering and 24 months of related experience as a Sr. Development Engineer or Product Development Engineer.
