Position Description: Safety Interns primary goals are to gain an understanding of the construction process and to support the Safety Manager and the project team in the successful completion of a construction project. This position assists the project team in planning, monitoring work activities, and correcting unsafe acts or conditions. Position Qualifications: Pursuing a 4-year degree in Occupational Safety & Health (preferred). Strong communication skills. Computer software- Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite. Essential Duties: Gain knowledge of the company Safety & Health Program. Learn applicable safety and health regulations as well as ways for effective company implementation. Become familiar with the construction process. Assist the Project Superintendent in the project site-specific safety orientation and other safety training. Be visible in the field for safety observations. Assist in the development and review of Activity Hazard Analysis. Assist the project team in conducting project safety audits. Assist the project team with accident and/or near miss investigations. Attend awareness level safety courses and other construction related courses. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity. Walking- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, and computer printer. The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration. Safety Interns primary goals are to gain an understanding of the construction process and to support the Safety Manager and the project team in the successful completion of a construction project. This position assists the project team in planning, monitoring work activities, and correcting unsafe acts or conditions. The internship program provides the intern and Hensel Phelps with an extended opportunity to evaluate if the fit is right for a long and successful career with Hensel Phelps after graduation.

Position Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a 4-year degree in Occupational Safety & Health (preferred).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Computer software- Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.
  • Essential Duties:
  • Gain knowledge of the company Safety & Health Program.
  • Learn applicable safety and health regulations as well as ways for effective company implementation.
  • Become familiar with the construction process.
  • Assist the Project Superintendent in the project site-specific safety orientation and other safety training.
  • Be visible in the field for safety observations.
  • Assist in the development and review of Activity Hazard Analysis.
  • Assist the project team in conducting project safety audits.
  • Assist the project team with accident and/or near miss investigations.
  • Attend awareness level safety courses and other construction related courses.
  • Perform periodic inspections such as fire extinguishers, ladders, first aid kits, etc.

Moderate Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • The individual in this position will periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity.
  • Walking- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.

  • The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration.
