Purpose of the Position This senior level position is responsible for the optical design, tolerancing, and characterization of high-end color corrected diffraction limited microscope objectives and imaging lenses.  An understanding of lens manufacturability, alignment, and assembly of tightly-toleranced lens systems is required, along with the ability to work on optical designs with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.  As a senior member of the engineering team, you may be called on to mentor and guide less experienced engineers with projects and technical challenges, and to provide longer term guidance on new product areas to pursue.  Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:   Develops and characterizes high-end color corrected diffraction limited microscope objectives and imaging lenses. Works closely with mechanical engineers to ensure that mechanical designs meet required system tolerances Documents project work and, at times, leads project and technical discussions Monitors and studies the latest trends and technological advancements in the field of optical design and high-resolution imaging, as they relate to new product ideas Works closely with manufacturing on prototypes, and takes ownership of the characterization of lens systems Develops, monitors, and maintains product development schedules Creates specifications and technical documentation Create and present effective technical presentations for product development or training purposes Mentor less experienced engineers/draftsman to assure their knowledge and skills provide them the experience they need to complete assigned projects independently, efficiently, and safely. Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas   The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position. Requirements Qualifications Experience: Minimum 10 years of demonstrated experience designing and characterizing diffraction limited multi-element lens system Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, or a related discipline Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of current lens fabrication, alignment, and assembly techniques Experience working with, and guiding mechanical engineers towards efficient mechanical lens system designs Experience with interferometric testing of diffraction limited lens systems Working knowledge of 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks Advanced knowledge of Zemax Optical Modeling Software or equivalent Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing priorities Direct Reports: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department. Essential Functions Sets appointments and meets with customers to determine design needs and formulate a design plan. Sells tile, wood, and stone products to complete the design plan Meet and exceed established goals Responsible for understanding, utilizing, and managing design applications i.e.; SketchUp, proprietary Online Design Appointment Scheduler, MyOrder, Salesforce (CRM), etc… Maintain customer contact at a high level and understand relationship selling, from pre-appointment/initial customer engagement to post purchase follow up Act and work in a manner that is consistent with company's core values. Provides timely feedback on product needs/assortment gaps through partnership with the Design Studio Manager and the SDRM Working Conditions (travel, hours, environment) While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a warehouse environment and moving vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to noisy. Physical/Sensory Requirements Physical Work - Ability exert 30 - 60 pounds of force occasionally, and or 20-30 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry push, pull, or otherwise move objects. The Body Systems team is responsible for realizing the design of composite body panels as well as the mechanisms and systems associated with interior and exterior vehicle systems. We are seeking a talented and experienced individual to join the Body Systems team as we embark on the development of the next generation of Czinger vehicles. The Role Refine and generate technical solutions for vehicle systems, such as Interior and Exterior body panels, 3D printed parts, lighting components, etc. Responsible for part and assembly releases throughout the program lifecycle. Provide hands-on technical support for components and technology during the development cycle as well as supporting prototype and production build activities. Manage parts and suppliers from initial concept through development, prototype stages and into production while developing lessons learned to support continuous improvement. Lead Electrical and Software teams with the functional integration of hardware. Lead collaborative development of systems with Design, Manufacturing, Vehicle Attributes, CAE, and other interfacing vehicle sub-system teams. Develop engineering designs, drive 3D packaging, generate drawings and installation procedures using CAD tools. Create design supporting documents like subsystem and component specifications, BOMs, FMEAs, DVP&Rs, etc. Communicate information with internal and external customer organizations. Adhere and deliver to program timing, quality, mass, and budget plans. Work cross-functionally to implement cost reduction methods and product improvements. Basic Qualifications BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and 5+ years of experience in the automotive or motorsport industry. Prior product development experience with interior, exterior, or closures systems. Knowledge of design requirements to deliver high quality products of the above-mentioned vehicle systems. Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and root causing issues occurring during component and system validation. Proven ability to deliver quality systems on time and within budget. Able to generate business cases for design proposals and provide recommendations. Is self-sufficient when modeling 3D CAD geometry and creating 2D part drawings. Purpose of the Position

This senior level position is responsible for the optical design, tolerancing, and characterization of high-end color corrected diffraction limited microscope objectives and imaging lenses.  An understanding of lens manufacturability, alignment, and assembly of tightly-toleranced lens systems is required, along with the ability to work on optical designs with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.  As a senior member of the engineering team, you may be called on to mentor and guide less experienced engineers with projects and technical challenges, and to provide longer term guidance on new product areas to pursue.  Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

 

  • Develops and characterizes high-end color corrected diffraction limited microscope objectives and imaging lenses.
  • Works closely with mechanical engineers to ensure that mechanical designs meet required system tolerances
  • Documents project work and, at times, leads project and technical discussions
  • Monitors and studies the latest trends and technological advancements in the field of optical design and high-resolution imaging, as they relate to new product ideas
  • Works closely with manufacturing on prototypes, and takes ownership of the characterization of lens systems
  • Develops, monitors, and maintains product development schedules
  • Creates specifications and technical documentation
  • Create and present effective technical presentations for product development or training purposes
  • Mentor less experienced engineers/draftsman to assure their knowledge and skills provide them the experience they need to complete assigned projects independently, efficiently, and safely.
  • Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of current lens fabrication, alignment, and assembly techniques
  • Experience working with, and guiding mechanical engineers towards efficient mechanical lens system designs
  • Experience with interferometric testing of diffraction limited lens systems
  • Working knowledge of 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks
  • Advanced knowledge of Zemax Optical Modeling Software or equivalent
  • Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards
  • Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing priorities

Direct Reports:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

The estimated pay range for this role is $75,000 - $ 110,706 annually
