Job Description: Job Title Design Engineer, Material Handling Operating Company : Environmental Solutions Group (ESG) – Heil Environmental and Marathon Equipment Location: Fort Payne, AL Reports to : Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Common Body Department : Operations Do you have material handling design experience within a heavy equipment manufacturing environment? We are looking for an experienced Material Handling Design Engineer to join our growing team in Fort Payne, AL. The Material Handling Design Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing material handling systems to move truck bodies and other materials within the manufacturing plant. Utilizing your knowledge of various types of conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, robotics, ergo lift or operator lift assist tools and other material handling equipment like lift and carry, lift and roll, lift and slide M/H systems to optimize material flow and minimize costs you will conduct feasibility studies, create detailed system layouts, select appropriate equipment, coordinate installation, and ensure proper functionality through testing and troubleshooting. To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have a desire to work in a hands-on environment supporting the shop floor, Process MEs, Launch MEs, tool room and operations management. You must have the ability to work with a manufacturing engineering mindset with the ability to read blueprints and CAD drawings and ability to use AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Experience in any or all of the following is strongly preferred: New Product Development (NPD), Electric Vehicles, flow manufacturing, metal fabrication processes, welding, assembly methodologies or paint systems. Six Sigma green or black belt certification preferred but not required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Develop comprehensive material handling system designs, including layout drawings, equipment selection, and material flow analysis. Evaluate current material handling process, considering innovations in material and methods. Recommend improvements to ensure most efficient and cost-effective handling and packaging procedures. Drafts sketches, samples, and written analysis of proposed designs or improvements to handling system, packaging, and other related elements. Estimate material needs, costs, and timelines for proposed projects and facilitate installation, testing, and debugging phases of projects. Oversee the justification, planning, and execution of individual capital equipment launch to scheduled timelines and within approved budget. Perform capacity calculations and cost estimations for proposed systems. Develop and execute testing procedures to verify system performance and functionality. Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during implementation and post-installation phases. Analyze ergonomic factors and safety considerations within the design process. Coordinate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, and maintenance personnel. Develop detailed system documentation including user manuals, operational procedures, and maintenance guidelines. Provide training to plant personnel on proper operation and maintenance of new material handling systems. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field. 3-5 years’ experience in Design or Manufacturing Engineering with special focus on material handling systems. Strong understanding of material handling principles, including conveyor systems, robotics, and storage systems Experience with metal fabrication, welding, assembly and/or paint systems/processes. Self-motivated with the ability to work towards a goal with minimal oversight from leadership. Maintaining records and documentation related to material handling systems and equipment Strong computer skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and CAD software including AutoCAD and SolidWorks. High level of integrity, strong initiative, ability to get agreement/buy-in, and a team-oriented work ethic. Experience and/or willingness to work in a fast-paced matrix environment, multi-tasking and prioritizing work based on business needs. Ability to travel domestically 10% of the time for assessing suppliers, training and capital equipment and automation cell reviews and buying off at vendor locations. Proficient in Industrial automation and automated material Handling system including design calculations and parts selection like drives, motors, and machine components. Basic knowledge in Finite Element analysis, PLC program integration, pneumatics and hydraulics. Do you have material handling design experience within a heavy equipment manufacturing environment?  We are looking for an experienced Material Handling Design Engineer to join our growing team in Fort Payne, AL. The Material Handling Design Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing material handling systems to move truck bodies and other materials within the manufacturing plant. Utilizing your knowledge of various types of conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems, robotics, ergo lift or operator lift assist tools and other material handling equipment like lift and carry, lift and roll, lift and slide M/H systems to optimize material flow and minimize costs you will conduct feasibility studies, create detailed system layouts, select appropriate equipment, coordinate installation, and ensure proper functionality through testing and troubleshooting.

To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have a desire to work in a hands-on environment supporting the shop floor, Process MEs, Launch MEs, tool room and operations management. You must have the ability to work with a manufacturing engineering mindset with the ability to read blueprints and CAD drawings and ability to use AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

Experience in any or all of the following is strongly preferred: New Product Development (NPD), Electric Vehicles, flow manufacturing, metal fabrication processes, welding, assembly methodologies or paint systems. Six Sigma green or black belt certification preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop comprehensive material handling system designs, including layout drawings, equipment selection, and material flow analysis.

  • Evaluate current material handling process, considering innovations in material and methods.

  • Recommend improvements to ensure most efficient and cost-effective handling and packaging procedures.

  • Drafts sketches, samples, and written analysis of proposed designs or improvements to handling system, packaging, and other related elements.

  • Estimate material needs, costs, and timelines for proposed projects and facilitate installation, testing, and debugging phases of projects.

  • Oversee the justification, planning, and execution of individual capital equipment launch to scheduled timelines and within approved budget.

  • Perform capacity calculations and cost estimations for proposed systems.

  • Develop and execute testing procedures to verify system performance and functionality.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during implementation and post-installation phases.

  • Analyze ergonomic factors and safety considerations within the design process.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including operations, engineering, and maintenance personnel.

  • Develop detailed system documentation including user manuals, operational procedures, and maintenance guidelines.

  • Provide training to plant personnel on proper operation and maintenance of new material handling systems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in Design or Manufacturing Engineering with special focus on material handling systems.

  • Strong understanding of material handling principles, including conveyor systems, robotics, and storage systems

  • Experience with metal fabrication, welding, assembly and/or paint systems/processes.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work towards a goal with minimal oversight from leadership.

  • Maintaining records and documentation related to material handling systems and equipment

  • Strong computer skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and CAD software including AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

  • High level of integrity, strong initiative, ability to get agreement/buy-in, and a team-oriented work ethic.

  • Experience and/or willingness to work in a fast-paced matrix environment, multi-tasking and prioritizing work based on business needs.

  • Ability to travel domestically 10% of the time for assessing suppliers, training and capital equipment and automation cell reviews and buying off at vendor locations.

  • Proficient in Industrial automation and automated material Handling system including design calculations and parts selection like drives, motors, and machine components.

  • Basic knowledge in Finite Element analysis, PLC program integration, pneumatics and hydraulics.
