Assembled logo
AssembledNew York City, New York
About Assembled Assembled builds the infrastructure that underpins exceptional customer support, empowering companies like CashApp, Etsy, and Robinhood to deliver faster, better service at scale. With solutions for workforce management, BPO collaboration, and AI-powered issue resolution, Assembled simplifies the complexities of modern support operations by uniting in-house, outsourced, and AI-powered agents in a single operating system. Backed by $70M in funding from NEA, Emergence Capital, and Stripe, and driven by a team of experts passionate about problem-solving, we’re at the forefront of support operations technology. The Role We’re looking for an experienced software engineer to help shape the foundation of Assembled’s data systems. You’ll join our Data Infrastructure team, a close partner to both our Core Infrastructure and AI Infrastructure teams, to own how data is modeled, stored, and served across the company. This work powers everything from customer-facing dashboards to internal analytics and AI-driven product features. We're currently rebuilding our metrics infrastructure from the ground up. Our legacy Go-based system made it difficult to scale, maintain, and trust the metrics we expose. We’re building a new analytics stack that enables fast, reliable metric queries and simplifies the development of new reports. You’ll be joining at a pivotal moment—early prototypes are in place, and we’re working toward a full-scale production rollout and long-term migration. The team also plays a central role in the development of Assembled’s AI platform, Assist. As we unify our WFM and AI products into a single Human+ AI experience, the Data Infrastructure team is responsible for the analytics that help customers understand how Assist is adopted, how it impacts performance, and where to optimize. You’ll collaborate closely with the Assist team to build robust data models and systems that support this functionality. One of the more unique challenges in this role is that our data infrastructure doesn't just support internal analytics—it powers customer-facing product experiences. While some outputs are traditional dashboards, others require near real-time responsiveness. As a result, our stack must support both large-scale analytical queries and low-latency, user-triggered interactions—capabilities that most analytics systems are not architected to handle simultaneously. We're building a unified system that can do both, without introducing mismatched data or duplicated definitions. In this role you'll: Design and build systems that power both the storage and retrieval of analytical data Own the transformation layer that models data for fast, consistent metric queries Define and maintain the metrics layer that supports dashboards, exports, APIs, and internal tools Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and Assist teams to build rich reporting experiences—like helping customers measure ROI on AI adoption Manage scalable pipelines that move and transform production data for analysis Instrument observability into the data platform, including freshness, lineage, and correctness You may be a good fit if you: Have experience working with modern data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery) and understand their performance characteristics Have built or maintained end-to-end ELT pipelines and are comfortable choosing the right level of precomputation Have designed or worked closely with a metrics or semantic layer, and understand how to define metrics that are consistent, queryable, and performant across reporting surfaces Are comfortable reasoning about systems tradeoffs—latency, cost, developer velocity, and reliability Take pride in building systems that are clear, maintainable, and empower others Have strong SQL fluency and are comfortable reading query plans, debugging slow queries, and optimizing for performance Nice to have (but not required): Experience with semantic layer tools like Cube, MetricFlow, or Looker’s LookML Familiarity with analytics-focused software engineering (e.g., event tracking, funnel analysis, experiment platforms) Experience modernizing legacy data systems or planning large-scale migrations Experience collaborating cross-functionally with AI/ML teams or product managers focused on AI systems Our U.S. benefits Generous medical, dental, and vision benefits Paid company holidays, sick time, and unlimited time off Monthly credits to spend on each: professional development, general wellness, Assembled customers, and commuting Paid parental leave Hybrid work model with catered lunches everyday (M-F), snacks, and beverages in our SF & NY offices 401(k) plan enrollment

Job Description

About Appgate

Appgate secures and protects an organization's most valuable assets with its high performance Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) solution and Cyber Advisory Services. Appgate is the only direct-routed ZTNA solution built for peak performance, superior protection and seamless interoperability. Appgate Cyber Advisory services harden your security posture and ensure business continuity. Appgate safeguards enterprises and government agencies worldwide.

As we expand our platform, we are building a Data + AI team to unlock the next generation of security solutions—ranging from network observability to AI-driven threat detection, insider risk monitoring, and securing emerging Agentic AI systems.

This is a rare opportunity to join a small, private, high-impact company where your work directly shapes the strategy, architecture, and core products that will define the future of security.

The Role

We are seeking Staff and Principal Engineers who thrive in ambiguity, excel at greenfield projects, and can serve as both architects and technical leaders. You will help us build the data foundation—including large-scale data pipelines and a cloud-native data lake—while also laying the groundwork for advanced AI systems that can work both on the AWS cloud as well as on prem cloud agnostic environments.

These hires will be the founding team engineers dedicated to this initiative, shaping the architecture, defining the stack, and setting engineering standards for a new core capability.

Your work will directly enable AI-driven security capabilities such as:

  • Network Policy Analyzer – understanding and optimizing network security policies.
  • Network Observability & Monitoring – real-time visibility into network health and performance.
  • AI Agents for Root Cause Analysis & Troubleshooting – self-learning systems to reduce time to resolution.
  • Threat Anomaly Detection & Breach Prediction – proactive defenses based on behavioral and contextual signals.
  • Insider Risk Detection – monitoring user behavior for signs of compromise or malicious intent.
  • Securing Agentic AI Systems – pioneering new approaches to safeguard autonomous AI agents.

What You’ll Do

  • Define and build the data platform: Design and implement scalable data pipelines, event streaming systems, and a centralized data lake to unify security data sources.
  • Enable AI products: Partner with AI researchers and product teams to operationalize ML/AI models on top of the data platform.
  • Shape architecture: Make foundational choices on tools, frameworks, and cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability, reliability, and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor: Guide engineers who are newer to modern data engineering and AI practices, helping them ramp up on cutting-edge technologies.
  • Drive clarity from ambiguity: Ask the right questions, identify gaps, and translate business goals into actionable technical roadmaps.
  • Influence company direction: Work closely with the CTO and leadership to align technical strategy with Appgate’s vision for AI-driven security.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience level: 8+ years in software/data engineering, with at least 3 years in a Staff, Principal, or Architect-level role.
  • Hands-on expertise in building distributed data systems (streaming, pipelines, ETL, batch + real-time processing).
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive as a self-starter, operating independently and owning delivery end-to-end.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization, and orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Proficiency with modern data technologies such as Kafka, Spark/Flink, Elastic Search, Redshift, Delta Lake, dbt, etc.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML production workflows (feature stores, model deployment, monitoring).
  • Track record of leading ambiguous greenfield initiatives, shaping architecture, and mentoring teams.
  • Experience within the security domain (secure access, monitoring, threat detection, anomaly detection).
  • Comfortable in high-growth, ambiguous environments with minimal structure.
  • Based in New York City, available to work onsite 3-4 days/week at One Penn Plaza.

Why Appgate

Appgate is a dynamic, innovative, and friendly place to work. Whether it’s taking ideas from our varied past experiences and applying them in different ways, or creating something completely new, we are all innovative team players who think big and want to make an impact. We strive to attract and retain talent from all backgrounds and create workplaces where everyone feels empowered to collaborate and contribute to the team.

  • Impact without bureaucracy: Your decisions will directly influence product direction and company success.
  • Small team, big mission: Work with world-class engineers and security experts in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Cutting-edge domain: Be at the forefront of securing the AI era, from Zero Trust to autonomous agents.
  • Growth opportunity: Define best practices, shape culture, and grow into broader leadership roles.
  • Location: NYC-based, with flexibility for hybrid work.
  • We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package:
    • Competitive salary, bonus and equity
    • 401k including company match
    • Full benefits including medical, dental, vision, short and long term disability, and life insurance
    • Flex time off Policy
    • Remote Work / Home office setup stipend
    • Mobile Phone Stipend
    • Certification assistance program

If you’re excited by the idea of building the Data + AI foundation of a next-gen network security company, we’d love to talk.
