Skydio logo

Senior Data Engineer

SkydioSan Mateo, California

$170,000 - $230,000 / year

Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios and beyond. About the role: We are looking for a foundational member of the Data Team to enable Skydio to make data-driven decisions and build data-centric products. You’ll build the systems that collect, transform, and store data from tens of thousands of autonomous drones, powering insights that make our vehicles smarter, safer, and more capable. You’ll have the opportunity to define our data architecture, champion modern tooling in Databricks and Palantir Foundry, and bring AI-assisted analytics to every corner of the company. This is not a back-office data role — you’ll be working on problems at the intersection of autonomy, AI, and massive-scale telemetry, helping Skydio turn raw flight data into intelligence that drives real-world impact! Examples of what you’ll help build: Predictive models that forecast hardware issues — like propeller or battery failures — before they happen, and automatically trigger the right mitigation steps. 3D maps of cellular and radio connectivity across the operational airspace, helping customers understand where their drones can safely and reliably fly. The company-wide data lakehouse that powers analytics, dashboards, and machine learning — built to be secure, scalable, and lightning-fast. AI-driven data tools that let anyone at Skydio explore data, uncover insights, and build pipelines for their use cases — all in a truly self-serve way. How you'll make an impact: Design and scale the data infrastructure that ingests live telemetry from tens of thousands of autonomous drones — reliably, efficiently, and with the scale to support the next generation of flight intelligence. Build and evolve our Databricks and Palantir Foundry environments to empower every Skydian to query data, define jobs, and build dashboards — turning raw telemetry into accessible, actionable insights. Develop data systems that make our products truly data-driven — from predictive analytics that anticipate hardware failures, to 3D connectivity mapping, to in-depth flight telemetry analysis that sharpens drone performance. Create and integrate AI-powered tools for data analysis, transformation, and pipeline generation — lowering the technical barrier and democratizing how teams access and build with data. Champion a data-driven culture by defining and enforcing best practices for data quality, lineage, and governance, keeping Skydio’s data lakehouse secure, performant, and cost-effective at scale. Collaborate with autonomy, manufacturing, and operations teams to unify how data flows across the company — enabling faster, smarter decision-making and unlocking AI-driven insights end-to-end. Lead and mentor data engineers, analysts, and stakeholders across Skydio — guiding teams toward better architecture, more reliable data models, and a shared culture of excellence. Ensure platform reliability by implementing robust monitoring, observability, and contributing to the on-call rotation for critical data systems. What would make you a good fit: 5+ years of professional experience, including 2+ years in software engineering and 2+ years in data engineering with a bias towards getting your hands dirty. Deep experience with Databricks or Palantir Foundry, including building pipelines, managing datasets, and developing dashboards or analytical applications. Proven track record of operating scalable data platforms, defining company-wide patterns that ensure reliability, performance, and cost effectiveness. Proficiency in SQL and at least one modern programming language (for example, Python or Java), and comfort working across the full data stack — from ingestion and transformation to orchestration and visualization. Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels and functions — from engineers and analysts to senior leadership — and to translate data into clear narratives and decisions. Demonstrated ability to lead technical direction, mentor teammates, and promote engineering excellence and best practices across the organization. Familiarity with AI-assisted data workflows, including tools that accelerate data transformations or enable natural-language interfaces for analytics. Bonus: Experience in robotics, IoT, or autonomous systems, or building data systems that integrate with real-world hardware. Why Join Us? At Skydio, you’ll help shape the future of autonomous flight technology. You’ll work alongside world-class engineers and domain experts, and you’ll be given ownership and autonomy to grow into a leadership role. We offer competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and an opportunity to make a tangible impact in an industry poised for massive growth. Data Product Operations Lead

David AISan Francisco, California
About David AI David AI is the first audio data research company. We bring an R&D approach to data–developing datasets with the same rigor AI labs bring to models. Our mission is to bring AI into the real world, and we believe audio is the gateway. Speech is versatile, accessible, and human—it fits naturally into everyday life. As audio AI advances and new use cases emerge, high-quality training data is the bottleneck. This is where David AI comes in. David AI was founded in 2024 by a team of former Scale AI engineers and operators. In less than a year, we’ve brought on most FAANG companies and AI labs as customers. We recently raised a $50M Series B from Meritech, NVIDIA, Jack Altman (Alt Capital), Amplify Partners, First Round Capital and other Tier 1 investors. Our team is sharp, humble, ambitious, and tight-knit. We’re looking for the best research, engineering, product, and operations minds to join us on our mission to push the frontier of audio AI. About our Data Operations team Our Data Operations team powers David AI's Data Factory, transforming raw audio into high-quality training datasets for leading AI labs. Our mandate is to spin up new data pipelines and run them at a massive scale. This means starting from a model capability we want a model to unlock, experimenting with different shapes of data and collection strategies, and validating them with researchers. Once an approach works, we industrialize it, building pipelines that can process audio with reliability, quality, and efficiency. We are relentless operators who thrive in ambiguity, equally comfortable prototyping novel workflows as we are managing large-scale production systems. About this role As a Data Product Operations Lead, you’ll help drive David AI’s Data Factory — designing and scaling the pipelines that turn raw audio into high-quality datasets for frontier AI labs. You’ll take ownership of data products from 0→1 prototypes through 1→N scale, working hands-on to build workflows, validate them with researchers, and run them reliably at production scale. In this role, you will Own end-to-end success of a data pipeline , from early experiments to scaling up production systems that generate high-quality audio data at high volumes. Design and run pipelines that process a high volume of audio data with reliability, quality, and efficiency. Work with researchers at leading AI labs to identify new model capabilities and turn them into concrete data workflows and project plans. Lead cross-functional workstreams across Ops, Product, and Engineering to build scalable “data factory” systems. Monitor and improve pipeline health , spotting and fixing issues in sourcing, quality, or process. Drive impact with metrics, using throughput, quality, and cost to prioritize and improve. Take full-stack accountability across operations, product, engineering, and customers, solving bottlenecks and ensuring delivery. Your background looks like 2–6 years in high-intensity environments (e.g. founder, strategy consulting, or venture-backed ops). Technical foundation in CS, Industrial Engineering, or similar; SQL required. Systems thinker who can spot leverage points and design for scale and durability. Strong product intuition, able to work with engineers and researchers to get to the right answer fast. High-execution operator: fast, detail-oriented, and uncompromising on quality. Collaborative and low-ego, willing to roll up your sleeves. Bonus points if you have A track record of extreme ownership, caring about outcomes over tasks. Experience in data, ML, or large-scale operations. Benefits Unlimited PTO. Top-notch health, dental, and vision coverage with 100% coverage for most plans. FSA & HSA access. 401k access.
