TimelyBoston, Massachusetts
Who we are Timely is your home for secondary master scheduling featuring AI optimization and support from a team of educators who know and have lived scheduling. Not only does Timely save time and headache, it unlocks resources so district and charter leaders can build a schedule that drives staffing and budget efficiencies. We founded Timely to build the tool we wish we'd had when we were in schools -- hoping to save school leaders hundreds of hours of wasted time while allowing district leaders to enable their academic, budget and staffing priorities. Our solution addresses the needs of school-based employees who toil away building schedules and central office employees who need visibility into them. After completing a successful pilot during the 2022-23 school year, we have scaled our impact across the country. Through a lean approach, we've achieved impressive growth - 8.0x and 3.6x ARR increases in consecutive years - with extraordinary renewal rates (95% logo retention, 96% gross revenue retention). Today, Timely is serving schools across 14 states and Washington D.C. This growth has been driven by our strong product-market fit, deep understanding of education, and commitment to customer success. About the role This role is a Senior Software Engineer position with a strong focus on frontend development (70% frontend, 30% backend). You will lead the design and development of user-facing features for Timely’s core web application, leveraging React for the frontend and Python for the backend. This is a high-impact position where you will work closely with product, engineering, and School Success teams to build features that directly impact educators and school administrators. Representative examples of projects include creating flexible data visualization capabilities for school decision-makers, refining the performance and usability of drag-and-drop interfaces for scheduling, and enabling prerequisite or alternate courses within the product. Throughout your work, you will have the opportunity to own the technical design, contribute to execution, guide & mentor junior engineers and support the delivery and rollout of projects to customers. Key Responsibilities: Own the development of key Timely app enhancements and features across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), ensuring high-quality code and design. Lead & contribute to the design and development of user-facing features with a strong focus on frontend (React) while maintaining full-stack capabilities (Python). Collaborate with internal teams (product, engineering, school success) and external stakeholders (especially customers) to identify needs, evaluate solutions, define well-scoped stories, and prioritize impactful work. Contribute to improving development processes, technical best practices, and cross-team communication. Provide technical leadership in the frontend and other areas of the stack if possible to enhance how well the product and technology perform on these dimensions: usability, reliability, maintainability, performance, scalability and security. Troubleshoot customer issues and provide timely resolutions to ensure a seamless scheduling experience. Some limited on-call responsibilities may apply. Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and continuous improvement. Required Qualifications 3-5 years of experience in full-stack development, preferably with some overlap with the Timely engineering stack (React, Python, AWS, MongoDB). Advanced knowledge of multiple React ecosystem technologies such as React hooks, state management solutions (Redux, Context API), and modern React patterns. Knowledge within a similar framework (eg. Vue) is ok as long as the candidate can ramp up on React. Proficiency with frontend build tools and testing frameworks (Webpack, Babel, Jest, React Testing Library), design systems, and performance measurement and optimization tooling. Proficiency in developing and maintaining scalable web applications, implementing unit and integration tests, and working with CI/CD pipelines. Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in cross-functional environments. Commitment to continuous improvement: seeking out and welcoming code reviews, pairing, and collaborative problem-solving. Experience and comfort operating in a fast startup environment and all that entails: strong sense of ownership, self-direction, bias towards action, and optimizing for quick delivery of value and learnings for the business. Prior experience in EdTech is a plus but not required. Fully remote role with a preference for candidates based in NY or Boston. Why Join Us Work with an exceptional team tackling meaningful challenges in education. Be part of a growing, financially healthy company with a proven product. Job Description

Company Description

Third Wave Automation is a rapidly growing startup that has demonstrated its core technology components, proven its market fit, and just closed its Series C funding. If you are excited about cutting edge machine learning, robotics that affects the real world, and want to join a company where your skills can have a huge impact, you’ll fit right in.

Third Wave Automation is applying modern machine learning to materials handling—delivering site-specific forklift navigation and infrastructure-free pallet handling that continuously adapts to changing floor configuration and warehouse demand.

Job Description

Third Wave Automation is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help drive the development of the core systems powering our autonomous forklifts. This is a high-impact individual contributor role focused on designing and building robust, scalable, and efficient software infrastructure that supports real-time, safety-critical robotic systems deployed in production environments. You'll lead efforts around performance-critical C++/Python development, systems integration, build tooling, and deployment workflows in Kubernetes-based environments. This position requires a deep understanding of networked systems, Linux internals, and build systems such as Bazel, with an emphasis on delivering production-grade solutions for robotics at scale.

How You Can Make an Impact

  • Architect and implement core infrastructure components in C++ and Python for autonomous vehicle systems
  • Own and optimize the Bazel build system to support large-scale, multi-language codebases with fast iteration cycles
  • Design and troubleshoot complex networked systems used in communication between vehicles, edge systems, and cloud services
  • Dive into Linux internals to tune performance, debug low-level issues, and ensure system reliability under real-world conditions
  • Structure and package applications for reliable and scalable deployment on Kubernetes, both in edge and cloud-based environments
  • Collaborate closely with autonomy, perception, and infrastructure teams to integrate and operationalize robotics software
  • Lead technical direction for key infrastructure efforts, mentor other engineers, and contribute to the long-term architectural vision

Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2+ years in a staff-level or senior IC capacity
  • Deep expertise in C++ and Python, with strong system design and debugging skills
  • Strong proficiency with the Bazel build system in large, polyglot repositories
  • Experience with ROS or similar middleware.
  • Extensive experience in a particular subfield of robotics (e.g. planning, SLAM, perception, real-time systems, etc.)
  • Thorough understanding of network protocols, distributed system design, and fault-tolerant communication
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux internals: namespaces, IPC, scheduling, memory management, and device drivers
  • Hands-on experience packaging and deploying applications in Kubernetes, ideally with edge compute or robotics use cases
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and drive technical outcomes across teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Bonus Points For

  • Experience working in robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other real-time/safety-critical systems
  • Familiarity with container runtimes and edge deployment strategies
  • Exposure to real-time networking, QoS, or time synchronization in distributed systems
  • Contributions to open-source infrastructure or build tooling projects

Leadership experience, including mentoring junior engineers, and project planning.

The pay range for this position is $158,000 - $238,000/yr+ benefits+equity; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.  Base pay information is based on market location.
