Juniper Solutions, Inc.New York, NY
We’re on a mission to make behavioral health more available and accessible. We're backed by a16z, YCombinator, Craft, and many others to make this dream a reality. -- Building an inclusive culture is one of our core tenets as a company. We’re very aware of the structural inequalities that exist, and recognize that underrepresented minorities are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t think they meet all of the requirements. If that’s you and you’re reading this, we’d like to encourage you to apply regardless — we’d love to get to know you and see if there’s a place for you here! -- About Our Mission At Juniper, we're building software for behavioral health clinicians to improve quality of care. We streamline and replace manual efforts so clinicians can focus on what they do best: providing high-quality care. We started Juniper because we care about impact — the lack of supply for behavioral healthcare means those who need it most cannot access it. We believe this is one of the biggest problems out there today. It’s why we’re tackling this broken industry, and why we want you on this mission with us. For more details on our thesis, check out our write-up What is Juniper? . About Our Culture Our mission to change behavioral health starts with us and and how we operate. We don’t want to just change behavioral health, we want to change the way startups operate. Here are a few tactical examples: 1) Diversity, equity, and inclusion has been a priority since day 1. Currently, half of our leadership team (COO + CTO) identify as female, and our cap table includes over a dozen women. We still have a ways to go, but we’re committed to sourcing, hiring, and retaining talent from underrepresented folks in tech and outside of tech. 2) Behavioral health is something we live and breathe — all four members of the Juniper leadership team see therapists every week, and we have a specific mental health benefit to help if that's something you're interested in exploring! 3) We have to have a sense of humor. Healthcare is so broken, it's depressing if you don't laugh with us. For more details take a look at our FAQs | Joining the Juniper Team ! About The Role Our team is growing rapidly, and we’re looking for mission-driven engineers who care about creating positive impact, love solving challenging problems, and will thrive in the fast-paced start-up life. This person will work up and down our stack, propose and lead new projects, and help us define the company’s technical and product direction. What you’ll do: Architect and deliver end-to-end implementation of projects and features — this includes running experiments, scoping features, producing design docs, implementing, testing, and maintaining a scalable codebase. Work with us to define and drive product features and technical direction of the company. Collaborate with both technical and non-technical teammates across a wide range of functions, including mentoring. Uphold security requirements and maintaining compliance with HIPAA security regulations. What we’re looking for: Throughput, velocity, and independence — an ability to drive and build projects from 0 to 1. To identify problems, build alignment, and implement solutions autonomously. Prioritization of engineering as a craft — beyond implementation that meets functional requirements, also strives for implementation that is readable, maintainable, and scalable. Growth mindset — a mentality of approaching unknowns with excitement, a penchant for learning new skills and technologies to solve new engineering challenges. Alignment on company values — it’s the first chapter of our company story. You’ll be expected to cultivate and nurture existing values, and also play a lead role in shaping how it unfolds. Juniper is based in New York City with a satellite office in San Francisco, and we prioritize in-person and hybrid candidates. Please refer to the top of this page for this position's hiring location. -- Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date, subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

Job Description

The Company

SPAN invented the smart electric panel. We transformed a century-old appliance into an intelligent device that can sense and control the sources and uses of electricity in your home. This makes going solar simpler, adding battery-based backup more valuable, gas appliances dispensable, EV fast-charging possible, appliance breakdowns preventable and generally makes people care about the energy that powers their home.

SPAN was founded by Tesla’s former head of energy products, the team that created and deployed the Tesla Powerwall, the world’s first mass-market and still most popular home battery.

The Role

SPAN is seeking a customer obsessed execution focused Director of Product to lead device software, digital services, and customer experience. You’ll play a critical role in shaping the product organization and roadmap by defining the product direction, execution, and product lifecycle. You will dive deep into the current product capabilities to inform a vision and execution for future product roadmap, driving successful product launches enabled by our hardware platform and delightful customer experience. You will bring a rigor in working backwards from the customer, leveraging research, discovery, and honed intuition.

Reporting to SPAN’s Head of Product, you'll ensure harmony across our product ecosystem by collaborating closely with the heads of Hardware products, Platform products, and Installer experience. Your role will be crucial in refining and defining a scalable software architecture across multiple hardware products, leveraging discovery and design practices, and maintaining UX excellence throughout the digital portfolio. You will champion user-centric design and product strategies, demonstrating how to prototype and iterate quickly while holding a high bar for quality, and delivering software-enabled features that bring cost savings, convenience, comfort, and carbon-reduction to homes equipped with a SPAN Panel.

Transforming the user's perception of electricity will be at the heart of your role. You'll turn an intricate, unseen concept into personalized insights, automations, and actions that resonate with homeowners' energy sources, uses, and costs. By overseeing the ongoing development of our Homeowner App and shaping the way consumers interact with and think about energy, you will play a pivotal role in redefining the energy narrative in their homes.

About You

Responsibilities

  1. Immerse yourself and the team in the needs of SPAN homeowners, channeling their desires for savings, convenience and better living into our consumer digital product strategy.

  2. Take ownership of the strategy, roadmap, and execution, in continuous alignment with counterpart product teams and overall business goals.

  3. Rapidly develop, iterate, and deliver products and features, maintaining a balance between production delivery, upcoming product/feature design, and new product/feature discovery.

  4. Champion a metrics-driven approach to prioritization and iteration, using engagement analytics to guide decision making.

  5. Maintain proficiency in 80% of our tech stack - native mobile and web apps, voice assistants, APIs, cloud back-end, data models, device firmware, control - and show eagerness to learn the remaining 20%.

  6. Foster an environment that supports complex, non-linear thinking to create unprecedented products and features, being unafraid to experiment with mental models beyond the energy industry.

We are looking for a leader who

  • Thinks critically. Can navigate through ambiguity, defend their point of view, and adopt a holistic yet pragmatic approach to problem-solving.

  • Inquires expertly. Asks high-quality questions to uncover underlying needs not just stated wants, and thinks about future scenarios to inform present decisions.

  • Communicates effectively. Can articulate product ideas and value propositions in a way that resonates with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Works collaboratively. Acts as a bridge between product, engineering, and business teams, viewing project management as a critical component of product success.

  • Understands technically. Is not hesitant to become intimately familiar with our product and back-end platform, advocating for architectural approaches that serve our users best.

  • Serves gladly. Enjoys being the go-to person, resolving issues, answering queries, and serving others willingly.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven leadership overseeing HW and SW Product teams.

  • Track record of shipping 0-to-1 consumer devices and digital products/features

  • Experience with personalized and journey-based experiences

  • Strong working knowledge of discovery techniques, design sprints, and rapid prototyping

  • Hands-on experience with product analytics tools, feature flagging services and in-app messaging systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive project execution.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience in the residential energy sector (home solar and storage systems, utility programs and rate structures)

  • Experience with connected home/IoT products (connected devices, smart appliances, assistants)

  • Experience at product-led companies

  • Experience at early-growth stage companies

The U.S. base salary range for this position is $224,000-$294,300 plus benefits, equity and variable compensation for Sales-related roles. This range represents SPAN’s good faith estimate of competitively-priced salary for the role based on national, real-time industry data from companies of a similar growth stage. Within the range, individual pay is determined by location and individual factors including relevant skills, experience and education or training.
