Principal Software Engineer - Data The Principal Software Engineer role provides a unique opportunity to work across engineering, data science, and security research functions of our growing business. While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads As a Software Engineer on the Starshield Integration & Test team, your focus will be on developing integrated operations and automation infrastructure for the Hardware In The Loop (HITL) testbeds and production floor that bring the Starshield Satellites to life. The team owns multiple mission critical services contributing to the Infrastructure Monitoring product, as well as partners with other teams to expand support for Google Cloud (and others) throughout the Datadog platform. Principal Software Engineer - Data

The Principal Software Engineer role provides a unique opportunity to work across engineering, data science, and security research functions of our growing business. You will be part of a highly visible, agile team working on critical areas that directly affect the company's success.

The role:

Obsidian seeks a detail-oriented Principal Software Engineer to build high-quality data products. The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a blend of engineering and data analysis acumen
  • Bring a high level of curiosity to wildly heterogeneous, semi-structured data
  • Rapidly learn and apply cybersecurity concepts

What You'll Do:

  • Participate in the engineering life cycle at Obsidian, with the primary responsibility of building data abstractions and data transformations that are at the core of our product.
  • You will deploy high-quality production code.
  • You will build features for machine learning models.
  • Develop and maintain flexible batch and real-time analytical pipelines that feed ML-based threat detection models.

Required skills/experience:

  • Extensive experience with Python and SQL is required. Experience with dbt, Spark, or DuckDB is a strong plus.
  • BS/MS Computer Science or a highly quantitative discipline.
  • 6-8 years of industry experience building high-quality data products is a must.

This is a hybrid position at Obsidian's Newport Beach, CA, office.

Pay Transparancy

Please note that the base pay range is a guideline and for candidates who receive an offer, the base pay will vary based on factors such as work location, as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the candidate. In addition to a competitive base salary, this position is eligible for equity awards and may be eligible for incentive compensation based on factors such as experience, skills, and location.
