Job Summary

Extra Space Storage is hiring a Software Engineering Manager to help develop and maintain our point-of-sale systems, which are critical to supporting 4,000+ employees in their daily work. These applications are relatively new and continue to evolve, handling over $3 billion per year in revenue and serving more than 1 million customers.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team in building software products that add value to both our customers and our business. Success in this role comes through supporting people in their career growth, providing direction on short- to mid-term goals, and engaging directly in technical discussions to ensure high-quality outcomes. This role typically has five to eight direct reports, including Software and Quality Engineers. You will also collaborate closely with Product Managers, Product Analysts, and other technical and business stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Domain Expertise: Bring a strong technical foundation and engage engineers in architecture and design discussions. Increase team capabilities in areas such as maintainability, scalability, and quality, while applying business process understanding to improve product delivery.

  • Providing Direction: Facilitate technical decisions, engage relevant contributors and stakeholders, and measure and communicate progress from daily to quarterly time frames.

  • Value Delivery: Guide team focus on objectives and key results (OKRs) and continuously improve software delivery processes.

  • Growing People: Hold purposeful one-on-one conversations, support skill development, and recruit and retain top engineering talent.

Job Specifications & Technology Environment

Our engineers work with a modern toolset, and managers are expected to have general knowledge in these areas (deep expertise may come from other backgrounds):

  • React

  • Node.js

  • AWS & CDK

  • Observability practices

  • Automated testing best practices

Education and Experience

  • 1-3 years of engineering leadership experience (team lead, supervisor, or manager level).

  • Prior experience as a software engineer with a strong technical foundation is preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands
