About Fern: At Fern, we believe every software company should offer a world-class API. We're building the toolkit to make that possible. We enable customers like Square, ElevenLabs, Webflow, and Intercom to offer a best-in-class developer (DX) and agent experiences (AX). Our team is primarily ex-Palantir and ex-founders, working together from our office in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We give builders the autonomy to take ownership, the speed to move quickly, and the support to do the best work of their careers. Fern is growing more than 5x year-over-year, is at the Series A stage, and has raised over $10M from Bessemer and Y Combinator. Why you should work here: Experience a hyper-growth startup: Join a top-decile growth company early. Job Description

About FutureHouse

FutureHouse is a non-profit AI research lab building an AI Scientist to automate research in biology and other complex sciences. We are seeking exceptionally creative, ambitious, and productive individuals to join our team as software engineers. Ideal candidates will be collaborators with our existing team of researchers and engineers, leveraging their software skills to implement new systems that help FutureHouse scale and set the state-of-the-art in AI-for-science research. Candidates should be comfortable writing code while also thinking at a systems level for deploying their work.

We are interested in applicants with a range of levels of experience. Compensation will depend on seniority.

This position is full-time in-person in San Francisco.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate as part of a team with other members of technical staff to implement new AI systems that can solve important scientific problems.
  • Come up with new ideas, identify and resolve challenges, and figure out how to maximize performance across a wide range of benchmarks.

Requirements:

  • Strong foundation in computer science.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, and open to mastering new technologies as needed.
  • Experience in the operations and deployment of database-backed and asynchronous applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve challenging problems and implement solutions efficiently.
  • Experience with complex ETL and data pipeline architectures is a plus.
  • Experience with LLMs for training or inference is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

What we offer:

  • We are working on interesting fundamental problems in science. You'll have unique access to working on long-term mission driven problems like how to design AI systems that improve the speed of research.
  • We have a ton of resources, including wet lab, compute, etc.
  • We publish our work.
  • Our headquarters in Dogpatch (SF) is super cool.

And also the normal HR stuff:

  • Annual salary range: $100K - $500K
  • 401(k) plan with company matching
  • Great medical benefits at low or no cost to you
  • Flexible time off
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation stipend to bring you to SF, if possible
  • The ability to join an ambitious start-up on the ground floor

What can you expect from FutureHouse?

  • We are tight-knit and collaborative research culture.
  • We are fiercely committed to a flat structure, team science, and individual contributions: we believe that the way to enable discoveries is to enable small, integrated teams of outstanding biologists and AI researchers to iterate rapidly towards ‘big-if-true’ ideas.
  • We work to flexibly hire the best talent in the world and to enable that talent to pursue their best ideas without the normal distractions, like product engineering, grant writing, etc.
