Laborer Overview The Laborer position is a dynamic, entry level role that works as part of a diverse crew to complete a variety of tasks within the Shiel Sexton concrete division. This role is perfect for someone looking to enter or further grow their career in construction – we provide training and development with a stable and consistent workload. This position encompasses multiple stages of the concrete process; from preparing the worksite, building forms, and rebar installation to pouring and top off. Role Responsibilities Preparing the worksite area for concrete footings and assembling concrete forms at construction site locations. Bending, Forming, Tying, and Installing rebar as illustrated in the plan or as directed by supervisor. Aligning and bracing portions of project assembly, using bubble leveler, boards, nails, and hammer. Using tape measure or laser sighting to measure between columns. Installing outside and inside wall panels, inserting pins or wall ties through holes in concrete wall panels to support, lift, and position panels. Removing obstructions in grosses with hammer and chisel. Patching holes, cracks, and joints in assembled sections using mortar and trowel or other necessary tools. Filling forms or panels with wet concrete. Vibrate, screed, trowel, or prepare surface, to ensure proper concrete settling and surfacing. Top off, screed, or float the top of wall with necessary tools as required. Qualifications Some construction experience preferred but not required, we will train motivated and driven individuals. Job Summary Perform miscellaneous duties around the plant which include, but are not limited to, keeping an area and plant equipment clean and operating properly, to assist with mechanic repairs and other maintenance, and perform miscellaneous unskilled duties related to the assigned work area. Ensure safe operation during shift and coordinate maintenance needs with Supervisor and Superintendent. Essential Duties Perform work requiring little skill or previous training in connection with rough, heavy labor, such as moving, lifting and piling materials, and loading and unloading cars, trucks, etc. Dig ditches, holes, etc. as required. Clean materials from areas around crushers, conveyors, elevators, loading stations, etc. using broom, shovel and wheelbarrow, or vacuum equipment as directed. Perform other duties as required and assigned. Clean vibrating screens with brush or a paddle. Clean all process equipment such as mixers, aerators, as required for color changes. Rap out equipment to dislodge material sticking to sides of kilns and other equipment with a sledge hammer. As a Laborer you will be responsible for the unloading, inspecting, processing, and disassembly of various types of scrap metal; yard clean up and maintenance; and other general physical labor duties to ensure the highest quality of scrap material is processed and shipped to our customers in a safe, effective manner. This position will work outside in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Working hours are from 7:45 am to 4:15 pm Monday through Friday, and from 7:45 am to noon on Saturdays as needed. Direct and assist customers to the proper location for the unloading of material. Inspect incoming material to identify non-conforming or unacceptable types of scrap metal and debris. Identify and grade acceptable ferrous and nonferrous material and identify material for upgrade potential. Prepare autos for processing, such as the removal of designated parts, fluids, etc. Operate equipment such as a forklift and skid steer to load, unload, and move material around the yard. Perform daily inspections on equipment reporting any defects or needed repairs to supervisor. General clean up and yard maintenance including but not limited to digging, sweeping, and maintenance of weeds and brush. Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned. Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures. Qualifications of a Laborer High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience. 1-year previous general labor in the scrap metal or construction industries preferred. Skid Loader/Skid Steer/Forklift experience preferred. Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) a plus. Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
