Salary Range: $226,000.00 - $264,000.00 What’s the role? We are seeking a skilled Web Frontend Architect to lead the evolution of our web frontend ecosystem. Your work will directly impact Etsy’s buyer and seller experiences (desktop and mobile web). The ideal candidate is a technical expert with a deep understanding of frontend technologies and architectural patterns for ecommerce systems. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering, UX Foundations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams with domain experts in fields such as design systems, accessibility, client-side frameworks, build systems and APIs along with product development teams. Together, we will create ‘paved paths’ that enable the delivery of high-quality, maintainable, performant and innovative web applications. What does the day-to-day look like? Define and drive the frontend architecture and technical roadmap. Provide technical leadership to frontend developers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and mentoring. Collaborate with product managers, UX/UI designers, and backend engineers. Design scalable, maintainable, high-performance frontend application architectures using modern frameworks with a particular emphasis on React (with knowledge of alternatives, e.g. Vue.js, Angular). Ensure contextually appropriate practices in accessibility, performance, security, and responsive design. Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and frameworks to keep the frontend stack modern and efficient. Establish and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and performance benchmarks. Oversee the integration of frontend and backend (API) architectures. Document architectural decisions, technical guidelines, and frontend infrastructure components. What’s the role?

We are seeking a skilled Web Frontend Architect to lead the evolution of our web frontend ecosystem. Your work will directly impact Etsy’s buyer and seller experiences (desktop and mobile web). The ideal candidate is a technical expert with a deep understanding of frontend technologies and architectural patterns for ecommerce systems.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering, UX Foundations. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

You will work closely with cross-functional teams with domain experts in fields such as design systems, accessibility, client-side frameworks, build systems and APIs along with product development teams. Together, we will create ‘paved paths’ that enable the delivery of high-quality, maintainable, performant and innovative web applications.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Define and drive the frontend architecture and technical roadmap.

  • Provide technical leadership to frontend developers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and mentoring.

  • Collaborate with product managers, UX/UI designers, and backend engineers.

  • Design scalable, maintainable, high-performance frontend application architectures using modern frameworks with a particular emphasis on React (with knowledge of alternatives, e.g. Vue.js, Angular).

  • Ensure contextually appropriate practices in accessibility, performance, security, and responsive design.

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and frameworks to keep the frontend stack modern and efficient.

  • Establish and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and performance benchmarks.

  • Oversee the integration of frontend and backend (API) architectures.

  • Document architectural decisions, technical guidelines, and frontend infrastructure components.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or comparable experience.

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong focus on frontend development.

  • 3+ years in a lead or architectural role designing complex frontend systems.

  • Expert proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/TypeScript and related technologies.

  • Deep knowledge of modern frontend frameworks and libraries (e.g., React, Redux, Vue, Angular).

  • Experience with Webpack, Vite, Babel, ESLint, and other frontend build tools.

  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, GraphQL or other architectures, and asynchronous request handling.

  • Proven experience in frontend performance optimization, cross-browser compatibility, and responsive design.

  • Familiarity with design systems, component libraries, and relevant tooling (e.g., Storybook).

  • Familiarity with frontend testing frameworks such as Jest, Mocha, Cypress, or Playwright.

  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines and frontend deployment strategies.

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with e-commerce applications.

  • Exposure to server-side rendering (SSR) and static site generation (e.g., Next.js, Nuxt).
