Design and Prototype Mechanical Engineer (Early Career)

This position will be performed in HRL’s Malibu and/or Calabasas locations. In this role, you will be part of a multidisciplinary department with projects designing, building and testing novel mechanical components, multi-functional subassemblies, imaging systems and mechanical systems using a variety of fabrication techniques, including additive manufacturing. Essential Duties: Rapid design, building and testing of prototypes and fixtures Create computer-aided design (CAD) models assemblies and appropriately GD&T drawings for in-house fabrication or quote. Use engineering principals, numerical calculations and simplified hand calculations to guide design and analysis Fabricate and assemble samples, fixtures and prototypes Select appropriate materials based on relevant properties and compatibility with the environment during process and deployment Work in a laboratory setting for testing and evaluation of: mechanical, thermal, chemical or electrical properties Work with the machine shop to fabricate components Work with outside vendors and suppliers to source materials, services, and components for prototyping and low-rate initial production Summarize findings for weekly report out, monthly presentations and written reports Required Skills: Mechanical design with CAD tools (e.g. Solidworks) Familiarity with analysis and testing of thermal, mechanical or electrical components. Creative problem solving and strong organizational skills. Excellent communication skills; includes both oral and written. Ability to work well in a team environment and work in a matrix organization. A motivated individual who can work independently, within project budget and schedule Prior programming background (Python, Matlab), electronics prototyping knowledge (Arduino, National Instruments) or finite element analysis (COMSOL, Abaqus) is a plus. Required Education: BA/BS or Master’s degree in engineering or physical sciences 1-3 years of experience Physical Requirements: Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile, have visual and hearing acuity, and manual dexterity to work within a laboratory environment. Must be on-site in Malibu or Calabasas at least 4 days a week. Essential Duties: Design and test of analog/mixed-signal integrated circuits including data converters, signal generation and signal processing circuits, and RF front-end electronics for a range of diverse applications. Understanding and pushing limits of circuit performance. Translating new concepts and theory into circuit implementations. Responsibilities involve all aspects of IC design including architecture development, circuit concept demonstration, transistor-level design, simulation, modeling, circuit measurement, and customer interaction. Required Skills: 5+ years actively involved with design and testing of mixed-signal integrated circuits in bipolar and FET technologies. Experience with laboratory test equipment and characterization of mixed-signal IC and devices is required, where validation of circuit concepts in a laboratory environment is encouraged. Experience with digital signal processing, applications of data converters and sampled data systems, and digital correction techniques are preferred. Digital design skills are also desirable. Familiarity with semiconductor IC technologies. Understanding of circuit design techniques, semiconductor device physics, signal processing, control theory, and communications theory. Familiarity with low power and low noise design techniques. Use of typical IC design CAD environments including Cadence and behavioral level simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink. A strong mathematical/analytical background is preferred. Required Education: M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering Physical Requirements: Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, verbal and written communication, interaction with customers/colleagues, and a deadline-driven/fast-paced environment. Must be able and willing to travel to customer sites and program reviews and sufficiently mobile to conduct business throughout plant site. Special Requirements: U.S. citizenship required. MICA is a private art and design college nationally known for the high quality of its undergraduate programs, its dedication to student learning and teaching excellence, and its distinction in fine art and design at national and international levels. This position is planned as a one-year special contract with the potential for renewal for up to 3 years at a non-tenure institution. The preferred start date is August 2025. About Architectural Design and the Department Material and Sculptural Studies: Architectural Design is an established program at MICA that is evolving to meet the needs of future generations of students interested in studying the field from the context of a BFA program within a stand-alone school of art and design. While it is currently situated within the Department of Material and Sculptural Studies, it is seen as an integral part of the forthcoming Design and Innovation major. The current program serves a small number of majors and is expected to educate students interested in integrating architectural practices with other art and design disciplines. Job Description: Full-time faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory First Year Experience to senior thesis level coursework. This is a leadership position that is intended to head the program, including curricular development and integration of Architectural Design within a larger undergraduate context. As such, it includes a course release and stipend to support that work. In addition, full-time faculty members at MICA participate in departmental and institution-wide committee service, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be an accomplished professional who has experience working in transdisciplinary contexts that integrate architectural and broader design practices. They will be able to help guide the transition of the program into its next iteration while meeting the needs of current students. Job Description
This position will be performed in HRL’s Malibu and/or Calabasas locations.
In this role, you will be part of a multidisciplinary department with projects designing, building and testing novel mechanical components, multi-functional subassemblies, imaging systems and mechanical systems using a variety of fabrication techniques, including additive manufacturing.
Essential Duties:
Rapid design, building and testing of prototypes and fixtures
Create computer-aided design (CAD) models assemblies and appropriately GD&T drawings for in-house fabrication or quote.
Use engineering principals, numerical calculations and simplified hand calculations to guide design and analysis
Fabricate and assemble samples, fixtures and prototypes
Select appropriate materials based on relevant properties and compatibility with the environment during process and deployment
Work in a laboratory setting for testing and evaluation of: mechanical, thermal, chemical or electrical properties
Work with the machine shop to fabricate components
Work with outside vendors and suppliers to source materials, services, and components for prototyping and low-rate initial production
Summarize findings for weekly report out, monthly presentations and written reports
Required Skills:
Mechanical design with CAD tools (e.g. Solidworks)
Familiarity with analysis and testing of thermal, mechanical or electrical components.
Creative problem solving and strong organizational skills.
