Overview
The Lead Safety Representative position will work to ensure all employees uphold the core value of safety by implementing and maintaining J.F. Electric safety programs. A successful Lead Safety Representative will develop positive professional relationships while working closely with field personnel, all levels of management, and outside agencies during all phases of operation. The Lead Safety Representative will oversee a group of Safety Representatives.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Works to align company safety philosophy with actual work practices
- Upholds the core safety values of the organization
- Trains field crews and employees on safety expectations
- Conducts orientation activities such as completing and checking paperwork on new hires, validating required experience and licensure, and collecting I-9 documentation
- Orientation can be in a local office or on multiple job sites
- Often requires travel
- Investigates incidents, injuries, damage to property, or other safety-related concerns
- Completes incident reports, OSHA required documentation and other reports related to safety
- Critically assesses and evaluates hazards as well as taking corrective actions at the moment
- Documents findings
- Communicates with HR, leadership, and field personnel about what happened and recommendations for how to prevent similar occurrences
- Verifies corrective measures have been completed (including recommendations of the safety committee, leaders, and those that arise from the suggestion programs)
- Proactively suggests safety improvements, process improvements, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep people safe in all facets of our work
- Develops and maintains programs to encourage safety suggestions from others, improvements to working conditions that may impact safety, and processes that respect safety needs
- Enforces safety standards, conducts safety audits, participates in client safety meetings or conference calls; conveys information from specific clients about their specific safety requirements on a specific job site or client's work
- Coordinates with others to enforce work procedures, rules, and regulations related to safety
- Communicates safety and health information at employee meetings
- Posts safety communications in various locations as needed
- Establishes and maintains relationships with local safety agencies and insurance carriers to foster good communication between the company and external influences on safety
- Observes workers and evaluates job activities to determine the use of prescribed safety equipment such as glasses, helmets, goggles, respirators, clothing, harnesses, and other PPE
- Inspects new processes, materials, tools, substances, and equipment to identify hazards before an issue occurs
- Backs up other Safety Reps and fills in for other employees who are out on vacation or leave, or in other situations where an onsite safety presence is prudent
- Develops positive, professional relationships with field personnel, all levels of leadership, outside agencies, and the general public
- Other duties as assigned or prudent
- Cross-train in all facets of the Division, preparing to fill in for anyone absent and grow in responsibility and scope over time.
The person in this role will uphold the culture of J.F. Electric, including relationship building with customers as well as general behavior on J.F. Electric or client premises or at J.F. Electric sponsored events.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
- Safety experience helpful, but can be trained
- OSHA certifications required prefer OSHA 500
- Training and presentation skills required
- Customer service experience and attitude
- Strong influencing skills required
- Negotiation skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Experience working with electricians or construction trades would be beneficial
- Ability to adhere to a schedule and reliably show up for all scheduled shifts on time
- Strong skills with organization, communication, and attention to detail
- Computer proficiency is essential
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Requirements:
- Climb ladders or scaffolding to perform inspections; occasionally work in confined spaces
- Occasionally in an aerial lift or helicopter
- May inspect trenches and excavations; climb poles, steel towers, and other structures
- Stand for prolonged periods, stoop, climb, squat, or walk
- Wear a respirator and personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned work
- Work is often outdoors with exposure to weather including high and low-temperature extremes
- Exposure to hazards of energized power lines and associated equipment
Travel Requirements:
- Travel will be extensive in this role
