Position: Area Head and Full-time Faculty in Architectural Design Reports to: Chair of the Department of Material and Sculptural Studies The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a one-year full-time faculty position as Area Head of the Architectural Design program. MICA is a private art and design college nationally known for the high quality of its undergraduate programs, its dedication to student learning and teaching excellence, and its distinction in fine art and design at national and international levels. This position is planned as a one-year special contract with the potential for renewal for up to 3 years at a non-tenure institution. The preferred start date is August 2025. About Architectural Design and the Department Material and Sculptural Studies: Architectural Design is an established program at MICA that is evolving to meet the needs of future generations of students interested in studying the field from the context of a BFA program within a stand-alone school of art and design. While it is currently situated within the Department of Material and Sculptural Studies, it is seen as an integral part of the forthcoming Design and Innovation major. The current program serves a small number of majors and is expected to educate students interested in integrating architectural practices with other art and design disciplines. Job Description: Full-time faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory First Year Experience to senior thesis level coursework. This is a leadership position that is intended to head the program, including curricular development and integration of Architectural Design within a larger undergraduate context. As such, it includes a course release and stipend to support that work. In addition, full-time faculty members at MICA participate in departmental and institution-wide committee service, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be an accomplished professional who has experience working in transdisciplinary contexts that integrate architectural and broader design practices. They will be able to help guide the transition of the program into its next iteration while meeting the needs of current students. Key Responsibilities include: Teaching five undergraduate studio classes per academic year, (2 fall/3 spring or 3 fall/2 spring). Overseeing the regular operations of the Architectural Design program Curricular Development that aligns Architectural Design within the Design Innovation and related programs. Program advising for current and incoming Architectural Design students Participation in departmental and institutional service Managing the departmental operating budget and participation in the capital budget process. Minimum Requirements: BArch, BFA, or BA in Architecture, Architectural Design, or related field Teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate assistantships Strong professional accomplishment demonstrated by a record of activity in the field Personal commitment to teaching on an undergraduate level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to our student body Capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate education including MICA's First Year Experience Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, curriculum development and review, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities Preferred Qualification: Master's degree in Architecture, Architectural Design, or related field Knowledgeable about contemporary architectural practices, history, and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contexts Familiarity with adaptation architecture Experience teaching with analog and digital fabrication tools Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims of the department and the College Administrative and/or project management experience within professional and/or academic environments Additional Information: This is a one-year full-time faculty appointment that may be renewed for up to three years. Reports to: Chair of the Department of Material and Sculptural Studies

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for a one-year full-time faculty position as Area Head of the Architectural Design program. MICA is a private art and design college nationally known for the high quality of its undergraduate programs, its dedication to student learning and teaching excellence, and its distinction in fine art and design at national and international levels. This position is planned as a one-year special contract with the potential for renewal for up to 3 years at a non-tenure institution. The preferred start date is August 2025.

About Architectural Design and the Department Material and Sculptural Studies:

Architectural Design is an established program at MICA that is evolving to meet the needs of future generations of students interested in studying the field from the context of a BFA program within a stand-alone school of art and design. While it is currently situated within the Department of Material and Sculptural Studies, it is seen as an integral part of the forthcoming Design and Innovation major. The current program serves a small number of majors and is expected to educate students interested in integrating architectural practices with other art and design disciplines.

Job Description:

Full-time faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from introductory First Year Experience to senior thesis level coursework. This is a leadership position that is intended to head the program, including curricular development and integration of Architectural Design within a larger undergraduate context. As such, it includes a course release and stipend to support that work. In addition, full-time faculty members at MICA participate in departmental and institution-wide committee service, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished professional who has experience working in transdisciplinary contexts that integrate architectural and broader design practices. They will be able to help guide the transition of the program into its next iteration while meeting the needs of current students.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching five undergraduate studio classes per academic year, (2 fall/3 spring or 3 fall/2 spring).
  • Overseeing the regular operations of the Architectural Design program
  • Curricular Development that aligns Architectural Design within the Design Innovation and related programs.
  • Program advising for current and incoming Architectural Design students
  • Participation in departmental and institutional service
  • Managing the departmental operating budget and participation in the capital budget process.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BArch, BFA, or BA in Architecture, Architectural Design, or related field
  • Teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate assistantships
  • Strong professional accomplishment demonstrated by a record of activity in the field
  • Personal commitment to teaching on an undergraduate level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to our student body
  • Capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate education including MICA's First Year Experience
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, curriculum development and review, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities

Preferred Qualification:

  • Master's degree in Architecture, Architectural Design, or related field
  • Knowledgeable about contemporary architectural practices, history, and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contexts
  • Familiarity with adaptation architecture
  • Experience teaching with analog and digital fabrication tools
  • Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims of the department and the College
  • Administrative and/or project management experience within professional and/or academic environments

Additional Information:

This is a one-year full-time faculty appointment that may be renewed for up to three years. The faculty are represented by the SEIU Local 500.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and College policy ranging from $56,246 to 146,325. Excellent benefits package.
