MICA is a private art and design college nationally known for the high quality of its undergraduate programs, its dedication to student learning and teaching excellence, and its distinction in fine art and design at national and international levels. This is a faculty position with a one-year special contract with the potential for renewal for up to 3 years at a non-tenure institution. The preferred start date is August 2025. Job Description: Join the Game Design program at MICA, where we approach games from a unique perspective that can only be found at an art and design college. Our program explores the design and development of games, how they are used to entertain, educate, and create meaning, and the role of play in culture. Game Design faculty teach 3 courses per semester, ranging from foundational non-digital game design courses to technical video game development courses using the Unity game engine. In addition, full-time faculty members at MICA participate in departmental and institution-wide committee service, and are expected to maintain an ongoing professional practice in the world of games or play. We welcome applicants from a broad spectrum of creative disciplines related to games, from commercial AAA and independent game development, to experimental interdisciplinary art practices which explore/use/interrogate games. You will design and advance new components and subsystems with challenging technical requirements from initial concept through successful manufacturing launch. You will manage existing concepts through development, deployment, and manufacturing. Mainspring is a great place for engineers who have a variety of areas of deep expertise and like to solve challenging cross-functional problems requiring a mix of computational analysis, hands-on engineering and team effort. Responsibilities Participate in brainstorming activities to develop novel ways to improve all aspects of the LEM and the Linear Generator broadly. Develop and optimize key mechanical and electromechanical subsystems within the LEM to drive down cost, improve performance, and deliver high reliability. These systems may include: magnetic encoders and other position sensors; high-voltage wiring and coil design; precision-machined steel and cast-iron components; magnet array assembly methods; composite material manufacturing and analysis; air bearing design, development, and testing. Work with reliability and test teams to validate systems and components with fast cycles of learning for deployment into the next generation of Linear Generators. Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing engineering, NPI, and external suppliers to rapidly deploy new designs into production. Demonstrated experience with volume manufacturing of electric motors or generators, including: Design for Quality, inspection and testing methods, insulation system design and certification, formed and wound coil design, magnetic material specification and handling, lamination design and manufacturing. Experience working directly with suppliers, vendors and contract manufacturers to address quality or manufacturing issues. Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Fluent in SolidWorks or comparable CAD package. Experience with using PDM or a similar CAD version control system is preferred.
