This Section Engineer oversees the Electric Substation Design team within the Electric Engineering Group. The Section Engineer for Electric Substation Design leads the ESD section. This leader must provide oversight and guidance to develop the engineering staff in ESD. ESD engineers perform engineering assignments related to the planning/scoping, evaluation, design, material procurement, construction, and performance of the company's electric substations and associated facilities. What does a Section Engineer- Electric Substation Design do? This role is pivotal in ensuring the successful design, integration, and coordination of structural and outfitting systems for various classes of vessels under construction. What is a Section Engineer- Electric Substation Design?

This Section Engineer oversees the Electric Substation Design team within the Electric Engineering Group. The Section Engineer for Electric Substation Design leads the ESD section. This leader must provide oversight and guidance to develop the engineering staff in ESD. ESD engineers perform engineering assignments related to the planning/scoping, evaluation, design, material procurement, construction, and performance of the company's electric substations and associated facilities.

What does a Section Engineer- Electric Substation Design do?

  • Displays the ability to lead (support, mentor, coach, teach, motivate, discipline, appraise, guide and reward) ESD section members to achieve desired results

  • Provides input into the development and supports the execution of the Category 13 Capital Budget

  • Provides leadership and guidance for employee development and training within the section including input into the development of area succession plans

  • Develops and fosters relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to obtain and share information that will benefit the company, shares best practices, provides and obtains technical advice, and builds bases of influence

  • Remains current with technology, policy developments, and industry practices, and contributes to the Company's strategic planning process

  • Develops precise engineering designs for new electric substations, as well as replacement of older substation infrastructure equipment with modern industry equipment including high voltage power transformers, circuit breakers, and disconnect switches, medium voltage electric switchgear as well as relay, control, and communications equipment

  • Promotes a safe work environment, including the achievement of corporate safety goals

  • Possesses the knowledge and understanding necessary to advise all company employees on electric substation design issues

  • Displays the ability to define optimal section staffing levels (including contract individuals), develops section resources and utilize the resources to maximum advantage

  • Displays the ability to effectively communicate constructive ideas, issues, thoughts and opinions in an objective, clear, and concise manner to section members, peers, managers, and executives

  • Displays the ability to incorporate unscheduled projects and assignments into work plans and constructively identifies any negative impacts to other assigned projects and assignment

  • Maintains effective working relationships with and is responsive to fellow employees, customers, and all the Company's external relationships

  • Represents Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations such as NYISO, EPRI, CEATI, NYSRC, NPCC, etc.

  • Identifies and promotes innovative solutions to engineering problems and/or enhancements to existing processes; investigates planning methods and procedures of the electric utility industry. Displays a consistent desire to improve processes and personally carry out process improvement

  • Provides support for storm restoration efforts

What does it take to be a Section Engineer- Electric Substation Design?

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or electrical engineering and 5+ years of related engineering/utility experience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly

  • Knowledgeable of the design and the operation of electric systems and possess a relative understanding of the goals and objectives of groups that interact with Electric Substation Design group

  • Possess the ability to work well as leader of a cross functional team, and a motivation to accomplish assigned tasks and seek out opportunities for learning

  • Significant knowledge of industry technologies, operating practices, and electric engineering theory.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Ability to multitask, juggle competing priorities, navigate complex situations, and consistently use good judgment.

  • Must demonstrate an elevated level of intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm, and promote a strong work ethic and positive customer service approach

  • Must be willing to respond to all requests to work outside of normal business hours
