Purpose Responsible for the design of piping systems and piping layouts. Provide technical direction/assistance to the assigned group and be accountable for managing the assigned staff, man-hour budget, and project schedule. Functions Provide system integration and design technical support for the Piping Detail Design of the assigned project design. Assist Mechanical Engineering Manager in resolving issues regarding day-to-day operations. Assist the Mechanical Engineering Manager in meeting the production schedule and maintaining resources and training needs within the Engineering Department. Evaluate and analyze data regarding integrated Piping systems and recommend improvements to arrangement and integration, especially regarding signal and cable restrictions. Perform detailed calculations to facilitate manufacturing, construction, and installation and to secure approvals by classification societies and government clients using standards, rules/regulations, and specifications. Review Mechanical and Piping documents, diagrams, and analyses; making changes/corrections as needed. Supervise the design, development, and revision of detailed drawings and 3D modeling products development and guidance to production. Provide technical direction, serve as a point of contact or liaison, prepare briefings for senior management, and assist in problem resolution specific to the project. Provide detailed plans of action and deficiency reports to support the project objectives and schedules. Prepare construction planning support activities. Oversee the integration of the Piping design in Production and work closely with the Company’s Project Managers and Superintendents. Interact knowledgeably with vendors and sub-contractors to perform and/or support systems integration. Conduct onboard surveys and ship checks and monitor Piping configuration in the Production Facility (PF). Maintain OPC Piping development in accordance with contract specifications, ABS, NVR and ESG design specifications. Perform other duties as instructed. Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise 2D or 3D Designers and other employees assigned to the Piping group. Engineering Dept. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior Piping Designers. Ensures Accountability – Holding self and others accountable to meet commitments. Collaborates – Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet all objectives. Reporting Relationship This position will report to the Engineering Group Manager Qualifications Bachelor’s or Associate degree in an engineering-related field and 5 years of piping design supervisory experience. Related experience should include a strong and proven knowledge of FORAN, Ship constructor or other 3D Design Software, AutoCAD, MSC Nastran, and Rhino. Integrity, flexibility/adaptability, initiative, interpersonal skills, diligence, and multi-tasking. Required Deep understanding of shipboard piping systems. Ability to determine the arrangement of piping systems Ability to determine the appropriate size and type of pipe systems onboard a ship. Intermediate to Advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional documents, classification society rules, coast guard regulations, and other standards, contract requirements, and specifications. POSITION DETAILS Position Summary – Defense Screw Pump Design Engineer The Design Engineer is the central point for engineering activity through the design and manufacture of screw pumps made to customer or internal specifications. In the defense organization, the design engineer is presented with unique operational requirements which ultimately ensure that US service men and women return from duty safely. Our AI software stack, Zenith , turns raw mission requirements into flight-ready spacecraft through a pipeline of agentic AI systems, embedded simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop validation. We’re hiring interns with a background in ML/AI and systems engineering to contribute to core algorithms across the stack: from geometry-aware generative design to system-level reasoning agents . You’ll work alongside spacecraft engineers and flight software developers to build AI that doesn’t just simulate spacecraft—it designs them. This is a hands-on role for students or early-career engineers who want to apply cutting-edge AI to real-world hardware. You’ll gain experience in spacecraft engineering, astrodynamics, and manufacturability by building models that directly influence how our satellites are designed, built, and flown. What You’ll Do Depending on project alignment and your background, you may work on: Systems AI (Architecture & Requirements) Build and fine-tune LLMs/VLMs that parse technical documents (RFPs, datasheets, ICDs, requirements trees) into subsystem constraints and architectures. Develop models that detect contradictions, inconsistencies, or gaps in requirements and suggest valid configurations. Contribute to automated generation of system artifacts: interface tables, block diagrams, FMEAs, and verification specs. Help formalize spacecraft system architecture knowledge (e.g., JSON schemas, graph-based representations) for model supervision and traceability. Generative Design AI (Physics & Geometry) Design and train reinforcement learning agents to explore multi-variable design spaces (structural, thermal, orbital, manufacturability). Develop CNN-based topology optimizers (e.g., U-Net + FEniCSx) to reduce mass in structural components while maintaining stiffness. Interface with CAD kernels (OpenCascade, CadQuery) and FEA/simulation frameworks (Ansys, GMAT, Thermal Desktop). Construct multi-agent AI systems that iteratively redesign spacecraft configurations using embedded physics models. Cross-cutting Work Integrate your models into Zenith’s pipelines, ensuring outputs flow downstream into design, simulation, and manufacturing agents. Help build a multimodal training dataset (text, diagrams, configs, simulation outputs) from real spacecraft programs. Collaborate daily with spacecraft engineers, systems architects, and test leads to ensure AI outputs match real-world engineering practices. Optionally contribute to customer-facing demos or onboarding automation for international engagements. What You’ll Bring Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, ML/AI, Engineering, or related technical field. Hands-on experience with ML/AI through research, projects, or internships. Strong proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow). Interest in at least one of: Vision-language models and automated document parsing Reinforcement learning for constrained optimization/control Simulation-aware ML, surrogate modeling, or physics-informed pipelines Geometry/topology optimization with CNNs or CAD/FEA integration Preferred Skills & Experience Exposure to structured engineering artifacts (ICDs, requirements tables, CAD trees, verification matrices). Familiarity with spacecraft concepts, astrodynamics, or control systems. Background in MBSE or architecture design tools (Capella, CORE, or custom frameworks). Hands-on ability to prototype or debug hardware/software systems. Clear communication skills and ability to work across AI + engineering disciplines.
